Anil Kapoor was born in Mumbai His father Surinder Kapoor was a film producer . He is the second of the four children. His elder brother Boney Kapoor is a film producer and his younger brother Sanjay kapoor is an actor .
He studied in Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School and later in St. Xavier’s College.
In 1984, he married Sunita Bhavnani a costume designer with whom he has two daughters and a son.
Anil Kapoor made his debut in films as a 15 year old in 1971 with Shashi Kapoor in Tu Payal Mein Geet, playing the role of the young Shashi Kapoor. The film however did not realize theatrically. So not many have heard or seen this film .
Anil Kapoor is an actor and producer and has appeaed in many Bollywood films as well as International films and Television Serials.
His career has a span of almost 40 years as an actor and as a producer since 2005. He has won many awards in his career including two National Film Awards and Six Filmfare Awards in different acting categories.
Anil Kapoor made his Hindi Film Cameo appearance with Umesh Mehra’s Hamare Tumhare in 1979 in a small role. He made his first debut and then starred as the lead actor in the Telegu film Vamsa Vriksham directed by Bapu in 1980. He then made a debut in the Kannada film with Mani Ratnam’s Pallavi Anu Pallavi in 1984.
For his role as the Supporting Actor in the film Mashaal in 1984 by Yash Chopra, he won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award . Anil Kapoor earned his first Award for his performance as FilmFare Best Actor Award for Tezaab in 1988 and later again for his performance in the film Beta in 1992.
Anil Kapoor has starred in many critically and commercially successful films, like in Meri Jung in 1985, Karma in 1986, Mr. India in 1987, Virasat In 1997 for which he has won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.., followed by Taal in 1999 for which he won his second Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, then the film Pukar in 2000 for which he won the National Film Award for the Best Actor. In 2005, it was for his film No Entry that he won an Award and againin 2015 for Dil Dhadakne Do he won the third FilmFare Best Supporting Actor Award.
Anil Kapoor’s first role in an international film was in Danny Boyle’s Academy Award – Winning film Slumdog Millionire for which he shared the Scren Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. His performance in the eight season of the action series 24 Generated rave reviews from the American Press. Globally Anil Kapoor is one of the most recognized actors of the Indian Cinema.
He had gained recognition in Bolly wood in the film Mashaal in which he has acted as Tapori persona and has the stubble look which was considered as unconventional at the time but has become a fashion and style over the years in India.
His released included the film Yudh and Saaheb. Yudh featured him uttering his iconic line’ Ek Dum Jhakaas’ which went on to be a tagline when the audience and media refer to Anil Kapoor. But it was in the film Meri Jung in 1985 wherein he plays the role of an angry young lawyer fighting for justice that gave him his 1st Filmfae Best Actor Nomination. In most of his films in 1985, he was noticed and his performance was much appreciated and he had truly arrived in the Indian Film industry.
In 1986 Anil Kapoor played a role of a Tapori once again in the film Karma . The film went on to become one of the biggest hits in that year followed by his carefree playboy role in the hit film Janbaaz co starring with Feroz Khan Kapoor’s other releases of 1986 were Insaaf Ki Awaaz with Rekha which was again a Box office hit and in the same year he displayed a crackling flare in comedy by his film Chameli Ki Shaadi directed by Basu Chatterjee.
What followed was the Title Role ‘ Mr India by Shekhar Kapur , his biggest hit of the year. The film became one of the biggest Box Office hits and shot him to the Superstar Status.
Anil Kapoor has equally liked his role in Mahesh Bhatt’s directed film Thikana. In 1988 he was rewarded with his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in ‘ Tezaab’the biggest blockbuster of 1988. He did a few flop films like ‘ Ram Avtar ’ and ‘ Vijay’ .
The following year he delivered Ram Lakhan the second highest Box office hit film of 1989 with the song of One Two Ka Four the film became a super hit.
With every role he proved to be a versatile actor who displaced vulnerability of his character so perfectly and every performance was with conviction and a perfectionist of the character he played in various films . Anil Kapoor excelled in his portrayal of an autistic person in 1989 in the film Eeshwar.
The Year 1990 saw him play a dual role as the twin brothers in the Highly successful film Kishen Kanhaiya and in the same year he gave a reasonably box office hit in the film, Ghar Ho to Aisa followed by his critically acclaimed performance in the film Awaargi..
His two films Jamai Raja and Jeevan Ek Sanghursh both South remakes were major flops. This was a set back in his career in the year 1990 the year he would have probably been crowned as the Number 1 in Bollywood. But these two flops proved otherwise . This was followed by a restrained yet striking performance as a Middle age man in Yash Chopra’s Romantic Drama film Lamhe opposite to Actress Sridevi for which she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award, a landmark film of Indian Cinema and Yash Chopra’s best work till date. It was the first time Anil Kapoor appeared without a moustache to depict his younger days in the film. Although the film was a Box office failure in India, it proved to be a success overseas . Benaam Badshah followed with a below average status.
In 1992, Anil Kapoor received his second Filmfare Best Actor Award for his hard hitting performance in Indra Kumar’s film BETA opposite to Madhuri Dixit. Kapoor was highly impressive in his comic role in Khel and the highlights of the film .
In 1993, he acted in the home production by his Brother Boney Kapoor’s mega budget film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja which was a disaster at the box office which damaged Anil Kapoor’s reputation as the Industry’s biggest star at that time.
The only successful and a major hit film was Laadla again with Sridevi a, a film produced by Nitin Manmohan . Anil Kapoor has given a splendid performance as a simpleton lover in the hit Musical 1942 Love Story . His 1995 release Trimurti was a box office disaster again though his performance was given its due credit and he again gave decent performance as an average performer for his film Gharwali Baharwali.
Anil Kapoor after a few box office failures he has had box office success as well with his films like Loafer, Judai, Deewana Mastana , Biwi No.1, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain which were box office hits.
Anil Kapoor’s unusual characters like the one he has portrayed in the film Taal shocked the audience and critics alike but he also won the rave reviews for his superb performance for his role in the film Virasat , a remake of the Tamil film Thevar Magan in 1992. . He has starred in the film Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate with Juhi Chawla . which didn’t do too well though he played a comic role which was well appreciated and liked by the audience.
He has further acted in films in 2000 with release of Bulandi, Nayak, Badhaai ho Badhaai which is a take off from the Hollywood film the Nutty Professor. He has had some glorious performances in the film Rishtey and Om Jai Jagadish in which he again gave an amazing performance. Anil Kapoor shared the screen with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time in the film Armaan.
He did few more releases like Calcutta Mail , Musafir, My Wife’s Murder which he also produced and Anees Bazmee’s super hit film No-Entry in 2005, which became the highest grossing film of the year. He was also in the film Bewafaa in 2005 with Kareena Kapoor and Sushmita Sen who plays a grey character with finesse followed by his role in the thriller film Chocolate and his first release in 2007. Salaame-e-Ishq a tribute to Love was a box office hit in the overseas entertainment segment though a flop in India. .
His film ‘ Welcome’ was declared as the Biggest successful film of the year. What followed were his understated performance in the films, Black and White by Subhash Ghai and Abba Mustan’s thriller film, ‘Race’, both were on top at the Box office.
Vijay Krishna Acharya’s film Tashan marked Anil Kapoor’s comeback to Yashraj Films but failed to do well at the Box office.
His most recent films were his first English Language film Slumdog Millionaire which was released in 2008 and a worldwide acclaimed film. Followed by Yuvraaj
Slumdog Millionire won him number of International Awards and received reviews from critics.. This film costed only US 15 million to prduce but pulled out $352 Million worldwide .
In 2009 he attended the 66th Golden Globe Awards Ceremony along with the team of Slumdog Millionaire which won the four Golden Globe Awards .
Anil Kapoor has on rare occasions contributed to the soundtracsk of his films as a singer. One of his first playback songs was the for the title track of his 1986 film Chameli ki Shaadi . the song was comic in nature and depicted the love story of Chameli and her lover Charandas played by Kapoor. Chameli was portrayed by Amrita Singh.
In the same decade his name was on the credit for the Song, “Tere Bina Main Nahin Mere Bina Tu Nahin’ from the film Woh Saat Din in which he starred opposite to Padmini Kolhapure. He has also credited for the song, I love you from Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai .
In 2008, Anil Kapoor provided rhyme-like dialogue to introduce his character in Yashraj’s film Tashan.His theme was titled ‘ Bhaiyaji Ka Tashan interestingly his co-stars in the film also had their introduction incorporated on the soundtrack which was composed by Vishal-Shekhar.
He also had one full album ‘ Welcome’ as a Co-singer with Salma Agha in 1986 . The album was scored by Bappi Lahiri.
Anil Kapoor made an appearance as himself in the ad for the Upcoming Angry Birds Friends tournament Champions for Earth.
He is currently starring in the lead role of Jai Singh Rathod in the Indian Remade series of’’24’reportedly for the rights for the American TV success, he has acquired it for an Amount INR 1 billion. It took him 1.5 years to license the rights to create and Indian Rendition of the Popular TV shows.
He has produced his first film in 2002 . Badhai Ho Badhai
In 2010 he produced Aisha starring his daughter Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol in the lead roles. The film performed moderately at the Box office grossing Rs.155 million in the run.
