Early Life

Sonam was born on 9th June 1985 to actor Anil Kapoor and his wife Sunita Kapoor,the former model and designer in Chembur. Later when Sonam was one month old the family shifted to Juhu. Sonam has a younger sister Rhea who is a designer and producer and a younger brother who is an aspiring actor Harshvardhan. She did her schooling from Arya Vidya Mandir School. She was always a carefree girl and also bullied boys. She played rugby and basketball and also learned Kathak and Latin dance. Her first job was as a waitress when she was fifteen.Although she left the job in a week. Sonam was diagnosed with insulin resistance and polycystic ovarian diseases. She has always supported various causes.

Personal Life

<p>Sonam received her pre university education from the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore where she learnt theatre and arts. She later completed her course in economics and political science from corresponding programmes of University of Mumbai when she returned back from London where she started the course in the same subjects. </p><p>Actor Ranveer Singh is her maternal cousin where as Arjun Kapoor and Mohit Marwah are her paternal cousins. Producer Boney Kapoor and former actor Sanjay Kapoor are her uncles. Sonam follows Hinduism and is quite religious too.<br></p><p><br></p>


Sonam Kapoor initially wanted to become a Director and a Writer. While she was studying in Singapore, her family friend, actress Rani Mukherjee visited her as even she was there for the shooting of her film Black. That is when Sonam told Rani her desire to work as a crew member on the film and on her father's recommendation Sanjay Leela Bhansali appointed her as his assistant. While she was assisting Bhansali, he told her that he wanted to cast her in his upcoming movie Saawariya which made her interested in acting. She was advised to lose weight for the lead role. She lost around 35 kg in two years.Saawariya was released in 2007 in which she played the role of a Muslim girl Sakina opposite Ranbir Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee. This was the first Indian feature film to be produced by Hollywood Studio, Sony Pictures Entertainment. The film was a major failure both critically and commercially. In 2009, she played the role of an aspiring singer opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Delhi 6 directed by Rakeysh Om Prakash M
