At the age of 14, she played a romantic lead actress role against a a Raj Kapoor, and Madhubala had finally arrived on the Indian screen. Over the next two years she had blossomed into a truly sensuous beauty, which earned her the name of the "Venus of the Indian Screen" with the film "Mahal" in the year 1949, she was a Superstar Overnight. In the 50's she did films like Tarana in the year 1951, Mr & Mrs. 55 in 1955 and her Swan Song from Mughal-E-Azam in 1960 showcased her remarkable talents as a serious artiste across several genres and revealed her as the ethereal beauty that she truly was. In the short time that she ruled the silver screen in Indian Cinema, Madhubala had achieved the kind of status that many actors and actresses only can dream of. She was very often compared to another ethereal beauty Marilyn Monroe who had also died young. The magic of Madhubala continues to captivate the cinema lovers all over the world. Her Career Span Madhubala worked in more than 24 to 25 films in the first four years of her career and is said to have co-starred with all the popular Heros of that time/ era. Starring with Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Rehman, Pradeep Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Dev Anand. She also worked with many top directors including Mehboob Khan (Amar), Guru Dutt (Mr & Mrs. 55), Kamal Amrohi (Mahal) and K Asif (Mughal-e-Azam). She also ventured into production and made the film Naata(1955).
Madhubala was born Mumtaz Jehan Begum on the Valentine's Day ( February 14th ) in year 1933, in a poor, conservative family of Pathan Muslim family in Delhi, and was the 5th child out of the 11 children to her parents. She entered the world of films at the tender age of eight Early predictions to the little Madhubala was this girl would make a name for herself and become a prominent personality for her fame and name.
Madhubala's career started with her maiden film, Basant in 1942 . she was then called Mumtaz but seeing her performance and amazed by her talent, Devika Rani changed her name to Madhubala. She did a short stint of film with Dilip Kumar for the movie Jwar Bhata in 1944 and was to play the lead role but things did not materialize but she got an opportunity to meet and know Dilip Kumar. Formed a popular screen couple with Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar . on the set of Tarana (1951) when she was eighteen years-old. While filming, she sent her hairdresser with a note written in Urdu along with a red rose asking him to accept it if he loved her, which intrigued and amused him and so he accepted the rose.
