She was also voted the India’s Greatest Actress in 100 years in a CNN – IBN National Poll conduted in 2013 on the occasion of the Centenary celebrations of the Indian Cinema. In September 2009, Sridevi had appeared on the Sony TV show hosted by Salman Khan to promote her husband’s film Wanted. Thereafter she has appeared on many ramps with Lakme Fashions between the years 2008 to 2010 . Sridevi has developed a flair for painting and her paintings were sold at an International Art Auction house and the money she had raised was donated. In 2011, Kareena Kapoor paid a tribute to Sridevi by performing a selection of her dance numbers at the Global Indian Film and Television Awards and Kareena in her tribute mentioned that She was her Hero and one of the reasons her generation chose to join films as an actress keeping Sridevi on a pedestal. In May 2012, Sridevi appeared in Aamir Khan’s Show Satyamev Jayte as a surprise to interview who was abused as a child. She signed the letter to the Government in support of passing a law criminalizing sexual abuse of children initiated by Aamir Khan.
Sridevi was born in Tamil Nadu as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan. Her father was a lawyer who was a Tamilian and her mother was Telugu.
During the 1980’s there were rumours that she and Mithun Chakraborty had a love affair going on and they were secretly married during the sets of Rakesh Roshan’s film Jaag Utha Insan. But later she married Boney Kapoor in 1996, a film producer and the elder brother of actor Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor.
Sridevi has been titled as the First Female Superstar of the Bollywood and Hindi Cinema. She started her career as a child Artist in M.A. Thirumuham’s Devotional film called the Thunaivan at the age of four and continued to act in a child role for many other films in Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and Kannada films . She made her debut in the Hindi films as a Child Artist in the film ‘ Julie ’ in 1975 and played her first adult role at the age of 13 as a leading actress in the Tamil film Moondru Mudichu in 1976. She acted in many more films like Masterji , Maqsad , Narana, Mr. India , Waqk Ki Awaz , Chandni , Sadma , Nagina , Chaalbaaz , Lamhe , Khuda Gawah , Gumrah , Laadla , Judaai which was one of her last few films in 1997. In 2012 after a long sabbatical from the films she returned to do a film after 15 years with ‘ English Vinglish ’ and was one of the only actress in the Indian Cinema whose come back after years was a success story. In 1989, Sridevi did her double role playing a twin sister in the film Chaalbaaz for which she won the Filmfare 80 Iconic performances of Hindi cinema. Sridevi is known for her perfection yet vivacious bubbly giggly girl and her ability to distinctively look serious and teary eyed in the next scene with the same ease and grace that would win hearts of her million fans. Sridevi announced her come back in 2011 with the film English Vinglish directed by Gauri Shinde . Her return was officially announced at the IIFA Awards the same year held inToronto. Her role in this film was compared with Meryl streep of India.Her performance in this film was one of her best ones and America’s Entertainment Weekly in their review mentioned her as charming as Audrey Hepburn in the manner she had portrayed her role in the film.
