The actor is best known for playing a supporting and character roles and gained his popularity with his character roles. The veteran actor who has been in the film industry over 35 years has starred in more than 60 films.

Some of the most popular films are Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai released in 1980, Dil Hai Manta Nahin in 1991, Junoon in 1992, Mohra in 1994, Rangeela in1995, Sabse Bada Khiladi and Baazi in the same year. Baadshah in 1999, Indian in 2001, LOC Kargil in 23, Airlift and Wazir in 2016 and Toofan Singh in 2017.

Apart from Hindi cinema, the actor has had played diverse roles in the television as well and some of the most notable ones are Ek Duje Ke Vaaste, Yeh Hai Aashiqui, Nukkad which got very famous and a much-loved tele serial, Hum Ne Li Hai Shapath. His most recent releases were in 2019 which included Aasud and Rabb Da Radio 2.

Avtar Gill has also acted in some of the lesser-known films such as Pagalpan , Next Level, Dhingana, Raja Leelai, Ustadon ke Usad and Sadiyaan.
