Sholay immortalized Jagdeep as Soorma Bhopali Though Jagdeep gave many hit films in a verity of roles but with Sholay he got immortalized as Soorma Bhopali. In fact few would know that Jagdeep had even tried to milk money on his popular image by producing a film called Soorma Bhopali (1988)! Jagdeep in an interview said, “This was in the 80’s when Mr. Amitabh Bachchan was riding high as superstar and had even excelled in comedy hence we comedians were out of job. That’s when I made the film to survive. To attract the audience I also used top stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Rekha, Danny, Kader Khan etc in cameo roles in my films but alas the movie fell flat on its face!!!”

Poverty forced Jagdeep to acting in cinema Jagdeep joined cinema not for his passion in acting but circumstances forced him to join cinema. After the demise of his father and the trauma of partition his family was left homeless. They lived on footpath in Mumbai and little Jagdeep, who was just 9 years old, sold readymade garments on streets to make a living for his family. Jagdeep was an extrovert since childhood and would draw huge customers with his antics. Once a person from B.R.Chopra Film Company spotted him and asked how much money he earns daily. Jagdeep said he made Rs 1/- per day. The man enticed him with a sum of Rs 3 per day. Jagdeep nodded. In an interview Jagdeep informed, “The film was B.R.Chopra’s debut film Afsana. There was a drama scene where children are performing drama. I had to just stand as an extra in the play. However when the scene began the boy who was performing the lead role could not utter the dialogue. It was in Urdu. There was chaos and Chopra sahab was angry. Hence I volunteered to act the scene and told the dialogue with ease. Chopra Sahab was very happy and instead of Rs 3 I was paid Rs 6/- per day. Thus began my journey into films.”

He married twice. First with Sughra Begum with whom he has Javed Jafri and Naved Jafri (famous actor). His second wife is Nazima with her he has a daughter Muskaan Jafri.

Jagdeep becomes most poplars child star With Afsana becoming hit Jagdeep became a popular child star and had the rare prestigious of working with some of the most celebrated filmmaker of that era like Raj Kapoor's Ab Dilli Door Nahin, K A Abbas' Munna and AVM's Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke. What’s more all the three films were released in 1957 and incidentally all contested the Best Children film National award. Eventually AVM’s Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke won the honor. Jagdeep recalls meeting Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru During the National award ceremony all the children of the film Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke were invited to Delhi. It was the first time when Jagdeep had the honor of meeting India’s first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was so impressed by Laloo Ustad (the character Jagdeep played in the film) that he hugged him and as a memorabilia presented him a walking stick. Jagdeep says it is the most cherished award in his life. Among his most notable films as child star include Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zameen, Aar Paar, Aasman, Bhai sahab, Dhake Ki Malmal and Sikwa in which he played younger version of Dilip Kumar. Among his other films as hero include Barkha (1959), Bindya (1960); Noor Mahal (1965) but all failed. Jagdeep survives as comedian After Soorma Bhopali in Sholay, Jagdeep ‘s other memorable role was of Khabri, the kick-side of detective G-9 (Mithun Chakraborty) in Surakshaa.
