His father is a businessman.

His Father-in-law is the noted actor Abhay Bhargava and his Mother-in-law is the popular television actress Kiran Bhargava of the Kumkum Bhagya fame.

He is said to have met his wife Ankita at the party hosted by her father wherein he was invited too to celebrate the party for the tele serial Ye Hai Mohabbatein. In the serial Karan and his father-in-law Abhay Bhargava were co-actors . Both the set of parents had given their consent for the good looking couple.

Karan joined the entertainment industry and had a pivotal role in Kasturi on Star Plus as Robbie Sabarwal.  Previous to that he had played a few roles in Balaji Telefilms.   He started his career with Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki where he plays the role of Vigyat. He also worked in tele serials like Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kasamh Se. 

In 2008 he made his debut by anchoring the new show called the Kaho Na Yaar Hai.

In 2013, he participated in the Dance competition, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.  He was also a part of the show Ye Hai Mohabbatein which he quit recently.  The role earned him numerous awards like Zee Gold Awards for the Best Popular Actor for three years in a row between 2014 and 2016.  He also won the Indian Television Academy Award for the Best Romantic Actor in Male category in 2015, Indian Tellly Awards for the Lead role as Best Actor.

Karan Patel’s role as Raman Kumar Om Prakash Bhalla had earned him Zee Gold Awards.
