Nana Patekar was born in Murud Janjira a small town in Raigad District of Maharashtra in India.    An Alumnus of the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, in Mumbai.

He went through a rough childhood.  Married to Neelkanti at the age of 27.  Celebrates Ganesh Chaturti the traditional Maharashtrian way. 

Nana Patekar has seen grief when he lost his father when he was 28 and also his first son.

He owes his passion to acting in theatre from his father who encouraged him to watch plays .  His first play was directed by Vijaya Mehta.

Patekar is also known for his playback singing for some of his films as Yeshwant, Wajood and Aanch.

A philanthropist, he is known for his simple lifestyle, his generosity in donating for various causes. He has donated proceeds of his successful films to different charitable organizations. He has provided aide to families of farmers who committed suicide due to indebtedness brought due to the drought wherein he distributed cheque of Rs 15,000 to 62 families from the Vidharba region and he gave aide to 113 families more from Latur and Osmanabad in Marathwada in September 2015.

Nana established the Naam Foundation in 2015 which works towards providing aid to the farmers in Maharashtra. To build 500 houses for the flood victims in the Shirol region in Kolhapur, a district in Maharashtra.

 

 

Nana Patekar is best known for his role in the film Agni Sakshi which was written by Ranbir Pushp for which he had won the National Film Award for the Best Supporting Actor. He has won many awards thereafter. 

A writer, philanthropist and film maker, Nana Patekar known best for his films in Hindi and Marathi.

Nana made his debut in Bollywood in the year 1978 with the drama film Gaman and thereafter had acted in Marathi films.  He again came back into Bollywood in 1989 in the film Parinda in which he plays a negative role of gangster. His directorial debut was with the film Prahaar:The final attack in 1994.   Patekar has acted in several films for which he received critical acclaim for his intense performance.   Some of the films were Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman in 1990, followed by Angaar in 1992 for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Villain.  Tirangaa in 1993, Krantiveer 1994 for which he won again won the National Award. Apaharaan in 2005, In 2017 he won the Marathi Filmfare Award for his performance in the film, Natsamrat.

Nana Patekar has also won the Padma Shri award for his dedication in Films and Arts.

Some of the films that Nana Patekar achieved his breakthrough career were Agni Sakshi , Khamoshi: The Musical in 1995, Shakti:The Power in 2002 ,Welcome in 2007 which had a sequel of Welcome Back in 2015, Raajneeti in 2010. His most recent was the Natsamrat in 2016.

Patekar rose to fame for his roles in the British series Lord Mountbatten :The Last Viceroy in which he plays the role of Nathuram Godse. He also had notable roles in the 1984 film Awaz, in Ankush released in 1986, Pratighaat in 1987, Mohre in 1987, Trisagni in 1988, Awam in 1987 and Sagar Sangam in 1988. 

His role in Mira Nair’s film Salaam Bombay released in 1988 received much appreciation and he was noticed as one of the mainstream actor in Hindi Cinema. 

Patekar had also portrayed character of ghost in the Children’s film Abhay that won him two awards at the 42nd National Film Festival in 1984.   He co-starred veteran Actor Rishi Kapoor in Hum Dono in 1994,  played the sadist husband in Agni Sakshi , played the emotional role of a father to Manisha Koirala in the film Khamoshi in 1995, a gangster in Ghulam-E-Mustafa in 1994 and that of a role of maverick cop in Yeshwant in 1997 a schizophrenic in Wajood in 1998 , an undercover agent in the film Kohram in 1998.  

Some of his films that he acted in were Yugpurush in 1998, Hu Tu Tu in 1999, Shakti in 2002, Ab Tak Chappan in 2004, Taxi 9211 in 2006, Ek in 2009, Ram Gopal Verma’s the Attacks of 26/11 in the year 2013. He starred in many Marathi films as well.

He also rendered his voice acing for Shere Khan for the Hindi version of the Jungle Book in 2016.

An illustrious career, Nana Patekar had no looking back when he entered the Hindi film industry and is considered as one of the most refined actor of his times.
