Vinod Mehra has received Filmfare Awards Nomination as Best Supporting Actor for Anurodh in 1977, Amar Deep in 1979 nd Bemisal in 1982.
He turned to become the producer and director of the film Gurudev in late 80’s with Sridevi , Rishi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor in the lead but he died of heart attack before its completion. The film was released three years after his death in 1993 after director Raj Sippy completed the film . He was one of the finalists in 1965 All India Talent Cntenst organized by United Producer and Filmfare from more than ten thousand contestants He lost the contest to Rajesh Khanna and became the Male Runner up of the Contest. It is said that in 1965 Vinod Mehra almost won the All India Talent contest , however he lost the title to Rajesh Khanna who was also one of the contestants but he became the runner up of the competition. The Contest was organized by Filmfare and United Producers. There were severa rumours about him on his various love affairs and one of them was him being married to Rekha as they were spotted together often. Vinod Mehra is said to be a good natured man, caring and would maintain his poise and dignity. Is known to have been very close to Moushumi Chatterjee and he has helped her groom to be a heroine. While he has always been passionate about cinema, fate had other plans and he died young. In an interview Vinod Mehra confessed that he had no plans of being an actor and that if Roop K. Shorey had not spotted him at the Gaylords restaurant and offered him the role in Ek Thi Reeta, he may have remained the marketing executive at the Goldfield Mercantile Company where he was employed at that time. It was also at the instance of Babu, Moushumi Chatterjee’s husband that he had agreed to appear at the United Producer’s Talent Contest. He was totally a Mamma;s Boy very attached to his mother and to please her he even went ahead and married the girl of his mother’s choice and it is also believe that his relationship with Rekha went awry because his mother didn’t approve of her to be his wife. Vinod had dressed as a woman in the song Teen Kanwaariya for his film Parde Ke Peechey
Vinod Mehra was born in Amritsar in 1945 and has an elder sister named Sharda who was also an actress who acted in 1960 in the film Ek Ke Baad Ek. Vinod Mehra was married three times. His first marriage was to Meena Broca arranged by his mother . The marriage was reportedly not consummated as Vinod Mehra had a heart attack shortly after the marriage . Once he recovered he chose to marry his frequent leading lady Bindiya Goswami, which he was still married to Meena. Meena left him and returned to her parent house.But Vinod Mehra's marriage to Bindiya Goswami was unraveled as she soon left him to marry Director J.P. Dutta. Following Bindiya's departure, Vinod Mehra was single for sometime and grew close to Rekha during this period and it was believed they had married each other but in 2004 television Interview, Rekha denied having ever married him and referred him affectionately as a well wisher and good friend. In 1988, Vinod Mehra married for the last time to Kiran. The marriage lasted till his untimely death. With Kiran he has two children Soniya born in 1988 itself and son named Rohan. The children were still in their infancy when he passed away of heart attack on 30th October 1990. He was only 45 years of age and too young to die. After his death, his widow Kiran took the two children and moved to Kenya which is where the children were raised. Later Soniya went to London for higher education . She then made her Hindi Film debut in Victoria No. 203, a remake of the old classic of 1972 by the same name. Rohan is likely to make his film debut shortly in a film made by Nikhil Advani.
Vinod Mehra started out as a Child actor in the late 1950’s before he went on to be a film actor in Bollywood Cinemas.. He has acted in over 100 flms through his career and till his death at the age of 45 in 1990. Mehra made his debut in the film Raagn in 1958 as a Child Artist playing the younger version of the Character by Kishore Kumar. After playing a few more minor roles as a child, he started his film career as an adult in 1971 with Ek Thi Reeta a smash hit based on the English film, ‘A Girl called Rita’ with costar Tanuja. This was followed by the film Parde Ke Peechey opposite to the debutant Yogeeta Bali followed by Elaan with Rekha , Amar Prem in 1972 with Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna as the lead pair and then Lal Patthar , though it was only Shakti Samanta’s Anuraag in 1972 with Moushumi Chatterjee that established him as an Actor. He went on to appear in 100 films in his career spanning over two decade. He played the lead role in some of his earlier films but often acted in many multi-starrer as the secondary lead or played supporting roles . He has worked with many top actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Sunil Dutt and Dharmendra. He frequently acted as a co-star with Rekha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Yogeeta Bali, Shabana Azmi, or Bindiya Goswami Some of his most prominent films were Nagin Jaani Dushman, Ghar, Swarg Narak, Kartavya, Saajan Bina Suhagan, Jurmana, Ek hi Rasta, Yeh Kaisa Insaaf Sweekar Kiya maine, Khud-Daar, to name a few. He has played in the leading role in a Punjabi film Maujaan Dubai Diyaan in 1985. Many of his delayed films were released after his death and dedicated to his memory such as Patthar Ke Phool in 1991, Insaniyat in 1994 and Aurat Aurat Aurat in 1996. He has starred in a few more movies that were shelved , Paras Mani Chitralay’s ‘ Garma Garmi’ in 1982, Starring with Reena Roy, Raj Kiran, Aruna Irani with music by Shanker Jaikishen. Produced by Paras Mani Chitralay. Directed by S. M. Abbas. He had also starred in the movie by Abid Arts International ‘ Mehboob ki Qasam in 1990 starring Bindiya Goswami, Raj Bhatia , Nazneen Shahla Khan, Prema Narayan, Madhu Malini, produced by Krishan Gopal Abid and Directed by Nripen Mohla. He starred in the shelved film ‘ Kasme Rasme’ in 1986 with Bindiya Goswami which was not completed for various issues . In th 1970’s and early 1980’s Vinod Mehra had a phenomenal Career. His performance in the films like Nagin, Jaani Dushman, Swarg Narak, Elaan, Aarop , Khud-Daar, and Anuraag couldn’t be missed nor could his boyish grin and soulful eyes . He had a Charismatic personality combined with amazing good looks and talent that spoke volumes in his films. He was credited as one of the most versatile actor .
