Amrita Rao was born in Mumbai in a well to do Saraswat Brahmin family to Deepak and Kanchan Rao.. Her father Deepak Rao owns an advertising agency in Mumbai. Not many know that her father is a recognized star performer and Corporate celebrity as the Conference Energiser and the single individual in the world to have such a vast Corporate Appreciation and patronage for his Extra Sensory Perception workshops. She has a twin sister Preetika Rao also known as Preeta. Both the girls attended the Canossa Convent Girls School in Mahim and the graduated from Sophia College with Psychology degree. Amrita comes from a conservative and traditional family background though her parents have been liberal in their thinking and let their daughter pursue her own dream and aspirations. Her native language is Konkani though she speaks fluent English, Hindi and Marathi. Her motto is Life is Short and Sweet. So make others happy and never let anyone down.

Amrita did not want to pursue a career with Bollywood but she got her chance to be a model for lot of commercials and advertisements from the age of 17. Her sister chose to be a Journalist/ column and movie critic. A niece to the well known legend Gurudutt who is her father’s cousin. She dated RJ Anmol for 7 years before finally tying the knot with him in May 2016. Amrita Rao is a vegetarian by choice.

Amrita Rao is professionally known to be one of the most talented and comes in the category of best actresses circle. Although she has worked quite less in the films compared to her contemporaries, she is remembered for all her roles that have been more or less the cute bubbly looking personality that made her instantly a favourite of the audience. She made her first screen appearance in the film Ab Ke Baras in 2002 for which she was also nominated for Filmfare best Female Debut Award in 2003. Her most memorable role and also popular was in the romantic film Vivah with Shahid Kapoor in 2006. She made special appearances in the films Heyy Baby in 2007, in Shaurya in 2008 and Life Partner in 2009 followed by Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai in 2010.. Amrita Rao’s roles mainly revolved around the Bollywood’s Girl Next Doors kind Her other hit films during her short film career was Masti in 2004, Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!, Shikhar, Deewaar , Ishq Vishk which were all an average at the Box office . Though she won 6 awards for her role in Ishq Vishk and Vivah. She is barely 12 movies old and yet she was able to create a niche for herself in the industry , a name quite well known and is known to be a star performer for whichever role that came her way . She has dancing talent and for her beauty and poise and innocence that lends a perfect combination to be a star, M.F Hussain chose her to be his 2nd Muse and theme of paintings after Madhuri Dixit. She has also acted in Telugu films which turned out to be a huge box office hit. Amrita Rao from her very first few films worked with the stalwart of the Hindi Cinema namely Shahrukh khan, Kabir Bedi who plays her father’s role in ‘ Main Hoon Na’, besides she has co-starred with Shahid Kapoor, Zayed Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Akshaye Khanna and Mahesh Babu, Sushmita Sen. Her role as the Sanjana Bakshi and the daughter of the Army Officer’s daughter in ‘ Main Hoon Na’ earned her the nomination of Best Supporting Actress at the Filmfare nomination. Amrita is a winner of the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Academy Award at an young age of 25 and was all set to continue with her innings with the Bollywood film industry. She continued to do small roles in the films like Milan Lutharia’s ‘ Deewaar’ wherein she plays the role of Radhika opposite Gaurang Doshi. Her next film was a co-star with Shahid Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt in the 2005 film Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi . she received a critical response for this film in which she plays the role of a school teacher and the critics said the only saving grace for this film to be in the highlight was the screen presence of Amrita Rao. She further went on to do a lead role in the film ‘ Shikhar’ and then in 2006 appeared in a low budget comedy film ‘ Pyare Mohan’ opposite Vivek Oberoi. Though she acted in the few films and is a face that the audience always regard with for her acting ability that appealed to her wide circle of admirers her films have not done too well at the Box Office. Amrita Rao was cast along with Mahesh Babu in the 2007 Telugu action film ‘ Athidhi’ . The film was directed by Surender Reddy. This film was one of the highest grossing films of that year in the Telugu film industry. She received positive reviews for her role in the Tollywood film . She appeared in the drama film ‘ My Name is Anthony Gonsalves’ opposite the new comer Nikhil Dwivedi. The film received negative reviews and failed to do the Box Office . Her performance was praised once again for her gorgeous looks but her role wasn’t substantial to take on the full potential of the actress of her caliber. ‘Shaurya’ her next film in the year 2008 as a guest appearance received positive reviews from the critics though the film did average at the Box office. Her film ‘ Welcome to Sajjanpur’ by Shyam Benegal was well received in the year 2008 and the film earned 20 millions (US# 300.000) , making it second highest grossing films of that year and Rao career graph shot up after this film and she received the Stardust Best Actress Award for her performance in this film. Amrita starred with Harman Baweja in the film Victory , a sports film which focused on the struggling cricketer . The film received mixed reviews and Rao is said to have garnered with applaud for her role as the cricketer’s childhood friend Nandini. Her other films were Short Kut opposite Akshaye Khanna, Love U Mr. Kalakaar her second film with Rajshri Productions which did very well. She made special appearance in the films Life Partner in 2007 and Jaane kahan Se Aayi Hai in 2010, Jolly LLB in 2013, and Sunny Deol’s action film Singh Saab the Great in 2013. Later that year she also appeared with Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Manoj Bajpai in the Prakash Jha’s political film Satyagraha.
