Entry into cinema ( 1999) Gracy Singh started off her film acting career with a minor supporting role in the 1999 drama Hu TuTu directed by Gulzar. She followed up with yet another supporting role in Anil Kapoor’s romantic movie Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain. Career breakthrough in Lagaan ( 2001) Gracy Singh after two uneventful cameos finally landed in a career altering outing in Ashutosh Gowariker epic sports drama Lagaan, where she paired opposite Aamir Khan in the lead along with an ensemble support cast. Singh could not have asked for anything more at that point as Lagaan turned out to be a career changer for Singh. The movie set in the Victorian period in Indian history narrated the fictional account of a group of villagers led by Aamir Khan’s character fed up with the ever increasing taxes imposed by British Government, who gets mixed up in a wager to play a cricket match ( which is a totally alien game for the villagers) with the Britisher’s after a quite a bit of turn of events, winning which will abolish taxes imposed on them. Lagaan also turned out to be blockbuster and one of the top grossers of the year. The movie had Singh portraying a rusty village girl who is in love with Khan’s character and the role won her much accolades as critics and movie goers took a strong liking to her charming looks and the realistic aura that she brought to the table with her seemingly innocent face. The movie was an instant classic with rave reviews and was also India’s official entry into The Best Foreign Language Film in the Academy Awards that year in 2001, with innumerable other Awards including eight National Film Awards and Eight Filmfare Awards and many more. Singh too swept away many Awards like for the Best Female Debut at IIFA Awards, Zee Cine Awards and Star Screen Awards with nominations for the same in the Filmfare section. Lagaan is till date considered as one of the best movies to have been made in India and enjoys a cult status and Sings character is also considered her career best performance by many. Array of successful movies ( 2002) After Lagaan Singh took a detour to Telugu cinema with Nagarjuna’s romcom Sathosham, where she played his love interest. The movie was a terrific hit and garnered superb reviews from the critics and also made her a regular name for the audience. After one more mediocre Telugu outing in Tappu Chessi Pappu Kudu , she returned to Bollywood with three major releases starting with Armaan and Gangaajal in 2002 , the former had her pairing with Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor which had a poor opening commercially with mostly mixed reviews and the latter had her playing the female lead in Prakash Jha’s action thriller which had Ajay Devgn as the protagonist, the movie was a super hit with exceptional reviews and established her as a major Bollywood heroine. Next major career break ( 2003) Rajkumar Hirani was next in line to cast Singh as the female lead in his comedy Munna bhai M.B.B.S, where she paired with Sanjay Dutt. The movie received extraordinary reviews and was one of the highest Blockbusters of the year and it also inspired a sequel in the year 2008. The cult classic had Gracy Singh play Dr.Suman aka “Chinki”, the love interest of Sunil Dutt , who prompts much changes to the life of Munna. The aura of unique combination of star quality and the girl next door looks appealed won the audience and the masses. The movie also gave Gracy Singh’s career a major revival and added to her reputation of being a serious actress in Bollywood. Follow up lead roles ( 2004- 2009) Gracy Singh next appeared in the musical hit Muskaan and the sleeper outing Shaart: The Challenge in the year 2004. She then went on to part of many offbeat ventures like Yehi Hai Zindagi, The White Land and Chanchal all of which made up her releases of the year 2006 which practically did nothing much for her career prospects which was followed up poorly with forgettable outings like Deshdrohi and Dekh Re Dhek in 2008. The year 2009 saw Singh taking a successful detour to Malayalam cinema, the emotional drama helmed by acclaimed Malayalam filmmaker Jayaraj had Gracy Singh pairing with megastar Mammootty in the lead. The movie turned out to be critics favourite had Singh playing a nurse who looks after an old man, who in a later stage fumbles upon the innate goodness of a vociferous villager referred to as “Mike” who plays a crucial role in the duo’s life. The movie had a good run at the box office and also kept the boxes ticking for Singh too on a high note after a major let-down phase. Recent films ( 2009 – 2016) In the latter part of 2009 she came up with her debut in Kannada cinema with the uneventful romcom Meghave Meghave. She also appeared in a cameo in Arjun’s Tamil movie Rama Rama Krishna Krishna which was a hit among the critics. She then played herself in the Hindi production Sai Ek Prerna and then went on to make her Marathi debut in Andhala Doctor.
