The 1981 film Yaarana which means Friendship is a musical drama, the film is directed by Rakesh Kumar starring Amitabh Bachchan and Amjad Khan. Neetu Singh and Tanuja in the female pivotal roles. The story is about two childhood friends of whom one is an orphan while the other is from an affluent rich family, but the family status never comes in between them. The story is based on the background of the Mahabharata, the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana. Amjad Khan a seasoned villain in most of the films has played a positive role in this film as Bishan .
One of the highlights of the film was the music by Rajesh Roshan with lyrics by Anjaan.The song ‘Chookar Mere Maan Ko’ , ‘Saara Zamana Haseeno Ka Deewana’ and ‘Tere Jaisa Yaar Kahan’ became the most popular songs which were sung by late Kishore Kumar and these songs are still very popular. One of the songs had Amitabh Bachchan’s coat fitted with electric bulbs dancing to the tune of Saara Zamana Haseeno Ka Deewana.
The story is about how the affluent friend helps his dear orphan friend to rise as a sensational singer. The film shows the strong bond between the two and in real life too it is said Amitabh Bachchan and Amjad Khan were very close and were thick friends.
The plot revolves around the orphan child. Being an orphan does stop him from becoming a self-sufficient and a hard-working young man. As always, a villain to spoil things between them is the rich boy Bishan uncle who has an eye on his widowed sister’s wealth and wants to separate the two friends Kishan and Bishan so that he can make way to his manipulation and by doing so he has been swindling the money from Bishan’s family.
Story of sacrifice, love, friendship the film was much loved by the audience as it also had the fight scenes in the climax when the two friends single handedly fight the hordes of goons. The film ends with families reuniting while the mastermind is sent to the jail.
