Which went on to become a hit. The writer for this film was Gulzar.
The story is of a middle class man
Rajesh essayed by Bachchan sahab. He lives with his sister. He is in love with a
nice woman and they have decided to marry, but like any brother wants to get his
sister married and then settle down. However, his sister is one day raped and murdered.
The police are unable to find the killer and unable to bear this, Rajesh takes
law in his hands, traces the murderer and kills him to avenge his sister’s
death. He is now on the run from the
police himself.
To save his life from the police,
Rajesh takes the help of a little child as a hostage in his home only to
release that the house belongs to the Police inspector (Sanjeev Kumar) who is
now married to his former lover essayed by Sharmila Tagore. He is also badly
injured due to the bullet that has hit him. His former lover helps him with the
dressing but keeps it a secret from her husband that the murderer is hiding in
their house. She in the meantime tries to convince Rajesh to surrender himself
and that he would get justice. But
Rajesh has lost faith on law and refuses to hand over himself.
After several attempts to arrest him
Sanjay finally manages to capture him and he beats him up until Mala who has
changed her name from Asha intervenes.
Sanjay suspects Mala. Their only
child goes missing and in the scuffle hurts himself and needs blood. Rajesh’s blood group matches that of the
child and he donates blood to save their child.
He leaves a message for Sanjay not to suspect their relationship and she
is as pure as ever and to accept her. As
he fled, Sanjay takes pity on him and asks Rajesh to come out of his hide out
but when Rajesh refuses he orders Mala to bring him out. The moment he comes
out the police shoot him and he is dead. Before dying on Sanjay;s lap he tells
them not to grieve that he only took revenge for his sister’s death by rape and
murder and to ensure a better life for other women who would have been a target
too. To ensure others are safe. The film ends with Rajesh’s pyre lit.
In his earlier films like Deewaar, and Sholay Amitabh Bachchan has been hit by a bullet but he is saved as the hero of the film but here in this film, in the climax the central character dies. Audience do not like to see their hero dead and the film didn’t do as well at the block buster as it did in the earlier two films.
