Throwback to Iconic Bollywood Dances

Over the decades, Bollywood has given the audience some of the most memorable and foot tapping dances that have remained in our hearts forever.  Hindi films have not just been portrayed as larger than life stories with its dramatic dialogues, but some of the films have had the most unforgettable dances that makes you tap your feet or get you on the dance floor to groove as well.  Some of the most iconic dances that we revisit down our memory lane are defined with each era. Let’s take a look at the famous dances.


First thing that comes to our mind is the energetic dances of Jeetendra. His dance from Himmatwala in 1983 with the late Actress Sridevi synchronized so well at their dance together brought a unique charm to the silver screen.  Catchy beats, lyrics and colorful outfits and props added to towards the success of the song



The golden era of the 90’s saw some of the most popular dance with Mithun Chakraborty with his electrical movements became popular his dances like I am a Disco Dancer from the film Disco Dancer of 1982 and Jimmi Jimmi Jimmi Aaja Aaja from the same film. Yaad Aa Raha Hai became a cult classic. 

The next actor that comes to our mind is Govinda, his thumkas were unparallel with any other actor that was a delight to watch. His steps portrayed joy and vibrance and a bit of humour coupled with some mischief.!  His famous dance number was Kisi Disco Mein Jaayein from Bade Miyan Chote Miyan released in 1998.   Govinda’s colourful clothes, his facial expression and the grace that he added with his hand movements or his foot tapping made his audience want to hit the dance floor. His dance moves were such that they lent a moment of celebration and spontaneity. He had a typical Govinda style signature dance making him one of the most favourite stars of Bollywood.



Hrithik Roshan radiated Magic on the screen with his dance moves since 2000. The millennium actor was soon the new dance sensation of the Hindi movies.  Hrithik was incredible with his dance skills that left his fans awestruck.  His best movies to watch especially for his dance is from his debut film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai featuring the popular song Ek Pal Ka Jeena which had Hrithik Roshan showcasing most impeccable dance moves. His dance brought a new level of professionalism to the Bollywood Dance and since then has inspired innumerable fans aspiring to be dancers. The handsome Actor with the looks of Greek God took the screen by storm with his electrifying performance with a blend of grace and power.





Some of the other unforgettable energy that is showcased in most popular movies are also by Ranveer Singh’s energy and Shahid Kapoor’s dance moves.  Their dance moves radiated zest and enthusiasm. Ranveer Singh’s perfect example was the song Malhari from the film Bajirao Mastani released in 2015 that set him on the screen with his authoritative and moves of a true warrior. The song is a favourite at every dance celebration.  Its infectious and he went on to become a dance icon of the top movies.



Shahid Kapoor set a new benchmark for the dancers in Bollywood as every beat that came alive with his stunning dance moves making a significant presence on screen. His dance moves from Jab We Met were passionate and intense and his dance moves in Mauja Hi Mauja from the film stole the show.  Shahid Kapoor’s popular movies were because of his memorable dance performance Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai from the film Phata Poster Nikhla Hero was an instant hit while it was not just the fun kind of dances but also his performance from the film Shaandaar showcased him in the song Gulabo where his dance had the versatility and a mix of contemporary and traditional moves which got the audience on the floor. 




Shah Rukh Khan the superstar made waves with his iconic dance moves in the song Jhooke Jo Pathaan from the Pathaan.  The steps for this dance hooked on to swaying his body effortlessly with his grace and his dimpled smile that became a sensation in the country.  The King Khan of Bollywood has had his dances moves memorable capturing the attention of his audience with his style and persona from 1998 movie Dil Se when Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora featured on the top of the train and danced to the Chaiyya Chaiyya choreographed by Farah Khan and was based on the Sufi Music. 





Katrina Kaif in the lead role in the film Agneepah swayed her body to the song Chikni Chameli in 2012, song sung by Shreya Ghoshal and choreographed by Ganesh Acharya. The song was a remake of the song Kombadi Palali in Marathi from the fil Jatra released earlier in 2006. Katrina Kaif had then given Bollywood ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ wherein Katrina had found it tough to adjust to the fast beats but the choreographer had got the best out of her expressions and her dangling from the chandelier the Lavani style dance in the rhythm of the song was much appreciated and loved by one and all.



Malaika Arora dancing to ‘Munni Badnaam Hui’ from the 2010 Hindi film Dabangg featured the actress opposite Sonu Sood and Salman Khan. This song and dance number won awards for the music and for the playback singing and was considered in par with the popularity of the item number ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ by Katrina Kaif in Tees Maar Khan released in 2010. The song was inspired and improvised and remade from an old Bhojpuri folk song ‘Launda Badnaam Hua Naseeb Tere Liye





Dola Re Dola was another iconic song from the Indian period drama Devdas in 2002, The film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. This song received a high acclamation from the audience and went on to become the blockbuster with due credit given to the dance duo by Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit, two the leading heroines of the Hindi movies. Both expressing their love through their dance moves during the Durga Puja which included Kathak and Bharatnatyam together. It also had the most lavish set. The dance was choreographed by Saroj Khan



The composition Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya composed by Naushad and sung by Lata Mangeshkar shows the very graceful Madhubala playing the role of the courtesan Anarkali in Mughal-E-Azam as she proclaims her love.





Fevicol Se the song with Kareena Kapoor just competed with the foot tapping number by Munni Badnaam Hui. The roaring success of Kareena and her sexy movement were choreographed by Farah Khan. Flashy outfits and colored props with neon lights were used during the filming of this item number. 


Kala Chashma the swag was a trending song in 2022 and got a worldwide popularity. The dance had contemporary pop elements with a blend of desi groovy music. Actors Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra dance in every frame of this song with the pair of black shades.



Aishwarya Rai in ‘Kajra Re’ from the film Bunty Aur Babli had the fans praising her elegance in her dance and her stunning looks came up as a surprise for the fans that kept them captivated making it the highlight of the film… Her special appearance with her glamorous attire, make up and jewelry showcasing her beauty and grace, was perfectly executed with the chemistry between Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan that created the family dynamic buzz!



Jumma Chumma three decades ago in the film 1991 featured Kimi Katkar and Amitabh Bachchan in the film Hum, the dance choreographer had revealed that Amitabh Bachchan had found some off the steps in dance to be vulgar which were omitted but this dance sequence was appreciated by Jaya Bachchan as the movie would be remembered by the fans for this dance.





Choli Ke Peeche from Filmmaker Subhash Ghai’s film Khalnayak in 1993 was remembered as one of the greatest hits and this dance picturized on Madhuri Dixit, Neena Gupta and Sanjay Dutt was a folk dance presented in an artistic way. The lyrics received a lot of protests. Playback singer Alka Yagnik sang the lines for Madhuri Dixit while the folk version filmed on Neena Gupta was sung by Ila Arun with music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal 



Ek Do Teen is one of the most iconic dance numbers from the film Tezab featuring Madhuri Dixit that became a milestone in the Hindi cinemas with its sensational track and became timeless after a decade or more. The fans recall how they were bestowed by her dance performance as she established herself as the leading film actress after this film. Madhuri Dixit rose to stardom after this action-drama film that she appeared alongside of Anil Kapoor and was the Mohini after Tezaab became popular and became a household name.   The diva was soon called the ‘Dhak Dhak Girl’ after her song Dhak Dhak Karne Laga from the film Beta which also became very popular among the masses. 





Mehbooba Mehbooba danced filmed on the sexy Helen is from the blockbuster Sholay the most watched Indian film ever had sold a record of 25 crore tickets world-wide. Helen seduced without any vulgarity in the song and dance that was iconic in the film of 1975 as she etched herself as one of the most graceful vamps.




Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast, was another track that got its popularity took by storm. The audience for many years would use these lines often on their courting or on their girlfriends or just for teasing the girls in colleges! Viju Shah’s lyrics with its catchy beat had its energetic dance performance of dance fusion by the pretty Raveena Tandon and Akshay Kumar.
