Ajay Devgn may be one of the few actors to have shown his talent in negative characters as well protagonists. He was awarded the best Villain Award in many occasions for his vivid portrayal . Ajay Devgn has been able to get into the list of the most influential film actors of our country in such a short time .Devgn has enacted many distinct characters in his career span which has shown his versatility as an actor .and also served as the producer under his home production Ajay Devgn Productions .
Ajay Devgn was born into an Punjabi family to famous stunt choreographer and director Veeru Devgan and producer Veena Devgan . So from a very early age itself Devgan was in Awe for the art because of his family’s deep running roots in Bollywood .Ajay Devgn in his childhood used to accompany his father to film sets and shootings which drew him closer to cinema. Ajay Devgn after completing his schooling from Silver Beach High School and after that did his graduation from Mithibai College ,after which he stepped into Hindi films. Ajay Devgn was exposed more to martial arts in his teenage and thus was seen in the initial phase of his career doing mostly action movies which came to an end with the release of Dilwale in 1994.He has changed his surname to Devgn unlike his other family members.
Ajay Devgn is a very much outspoken individual in real life in contrast to his larger than life cinema avatars. He was in a relationship with Kajol from the days when they worked together for the movie Gundaraj. The two have acted in many successful movies as the lead pair which eventually led to their marriage on 24 th February, 1999. The couple has two children ; an elder girl named Nysa Devgn and a young son Yug Devgn. His surname was initially spelled as Devgan which he changed to Devgn in August 2009 on the request of his family .
Ajay Devgn began his acting career by starring in the blockbuster action movie Phool Aur Kaante (1991)directed by Kuku Kohli which went on to fetch him a Filmfare award for best male debut for his work. After which Ajay Devgn came up with yet another action avatar in Jigar (1992) which incidentally too was well received at that time making it the seventh highest grossing movie of the year 1992 .After back to back macho roles Ajay Devgn made a genre detour and tried his hand in the romantic movie Dil Hai Betaab (1993) a typical love triangle movie with some shades of revenge which had nothing new to offer to the audience thus becoming his first official flop but Devgn’s performance turned out to be only saving grace for the movie .Devgn made a mark for himself rising above the mediocre script with his matured depiction of the Ajay which incidentally was his characters name too in the movie . Then Devgn moved on to Divya Shakti (1993) which too had a excellent box office run then and he did Sangram in the same year but could not repeat the same response .Ek Hi Raasta ,Shaktiman ,Dhanwaan and Bedardi all were his releases of 1993 which failed to create an impact at all . After the repeated bombings of his action movies Devgn switched back to the romantic genre with Dilwale (1994) along with Suniel Shetty and Raveena Tandon which got him a break in Bollywood , his character of a man with intellectual disability was highly appreciated for showcasing his acting skills in a challenging role for the first time till then .Dilwale was a career changing movie for Devgn who went on to do Kanoon which Devgn himself remembers as one of his biggest flops of the 90”s .but then Devgn went on to act alongside Akshay Kumar in Suhaag which completed his initial releases for 1994 , Suhaag was a box office hit and became a commercial success .Ajay Devgn during this phase was being cast mainly as the typical “man with a revenge roles and the all virtuous macho man hero “ which was recurring theme’ in Hindi cinema at that time .Devgn then commited for Vijaypath for which he had to decline the offer to play the one of the leads in Rakesh Roshan’s epic movie Karan Arjun which enjoys a cult audience even today but luckily for Devgn Vijaypath became a hit . Ajay Devgn’s career witnessed a unexpected turn of events in 1995 where he was cast by the acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt in his Naajayaz opposite Juhi Chawla , this emotional drama opened up a new path for Devgn who got nominated for best actor at Filmfare awards that year for the very first time in his career .Hulchul , came up next which also had a moderate run .Gundaraj even though a commercial and critical failure was a milestone movie by all means in Devgn’s personal life as it is in the course of that movie that he got into a relationship with his spouse to be Kajol who afterwards became a star couple in Bollywood .Haqeeqat was also declared a hit next . Devgn went on to do other adventure movie`s like Diljale, Jung and Jaan which were elevating his stardom to a whole new level as of an action hero .Devgn paired with Aamir khan for Indra Kumar`s Ishq which was a paisa vasool entertainer movie which got wide acclaim from all corners. By then Ajay Devgn had been recognized as a serious actor who could pull of meaty roles too by the critics and audience alike.Zakhm ,Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Major Saab were priceless additions to his filmography .He received wide critical acclaim for the very first time in Zakhm which dealt with the socially responsible theme of communal tension in the time of Mumbai riots , for which Ajay Devgn got the National Film Award for Best Actor and other Best actor awards that year for his highly intense depiction of the protagonist who was fed up with his own religious conflict. The year 1999 Devgn Starred in a romantic movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam which was truly an unexpected turning point in Devgn’s career as of then. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial which also featured Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan in the cast had proven the ability of Ajay Devgn to pull off Intense emotional scenes with ease , a skill up his armour which he got to use rarely in his earlier movies. Then came movies like Hindustan Ki Kasam and Kachche Dhaage both becoming commercial hits back to back .after doing a successful film Hogi Pyaar Ki Jeet and began 2000’s with a row of average hits like Yeh Raasta Hain Pyar Ke , Deewane , Raju chacha and many more . He was nominated for Filmfare best supporting actor award in Lajja(2001) opposite Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor .The year 2002 saw him associating for the very first time with an ace director Ram Gopal Varma for his dark ,gritty gangster experiment Company ,which fetched him many accolades for his subtle presentation of the role. Ajay Devgn got nominated for Filmfare Best Actor and Film Critics Awards for Best Actor that year .After the comedy Hum Kisise Kum Nahin , he went on to play the great Bhagat Singh in the film, The Legend of Bhagat Singh for which Ajay Devgn was praised to have lived up to the character in the best possible way bringing him many awards including National Film Award for Best Actor though the movie failed to catch the public opinion . He further did a killer antagonist role in Deewangee which gave him much recognition. Then came Ram Gopal Varma’s critical and commercial hit Bhoot .Gangaajal was Devgn’s comeback after a few hollow attempts, directed by Prakash Jha the movie was well received. After completing Zameen he did L O C Kargil a war based film which was noted for its songs and also was the longest Indian feature film till date in terms of duration with a running time of 255minutes .In 2004 , he had a surprise blockbuster in Khakee directed by Rajkumar Santhoshi with an ensemble cast .Devgns next big break came in 2004 when he joined hands with maestro Mani Ratnam for Yuva a highly successful film on campus politics is the Hindi version of Aayutha Ezhuthu a highly successful Tamil movie starring Surya and Madhavan in the lead .Ajay Devgn took a huge career leap in 2004 by starring in RainCoat by Rituparna Ghosh which was a off-beat movie which was a highly influential film which won Best film in Hindi National Award that year .Devgn was praised for his eloquent portrayal of the lead. After many unsuccessful films then came Omkara an Hindi adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello yet another critical hit and one of the best performance in the actor’s career coupled with Raincoat .After which the comic movie franchise directed by Rohit Shetty Golmaal was a exploration of the comic timing of the actor .At this phase Ajay Devgn committed a line of commercial mindless entertainers which were commercial hits . Ajay Devgn ventured into feature filmmaking with U Me Aur Hum along with his wife Kajol which was just a sleeper hit . After movies like London Dreams, Golmaal returns and more Devgn started the 2010’s with gems like Once Upon a Time in Mumbai , Raajneeti all of which saw the return of the brilliant actor in Devgn while also doing commercial entertainers simultaneously like Golmaal 3, Son of Sardaar maintaining his stardom too .Aakrosh by Priyadarshan too had positive reviews but failed commercially .Devgn after some cameos and silent hits was cast in the Singham cinema series which gained a huge blockbuster status consistently .Devgn’s major movie of 2015 was the Hindi remake of the Malayalam blockbuster Drishyam which retained the original title was a strong comeback for Ajay Devgn which had a lasting impact. 2016 released is his directorial dream project with Shivaay in which he played the lead role as well which had a good run at the box office .
