Amrita is known to the film Industry as an extremely honest, straightforward and upright in her dealings while she is measured and is politically correct. Amrita Singh and Saif’s personal life has always been a talk of the town. Their affair of her being much older than him grabbed many eyeballs back then. That was the time Saif had just entered the industry and Amrita Singh was already an established actress. Sparks flew and the two fell in love proving that love holds no boundaries of age or cast. Both their families were much against their relationship as well as their marriage and in October 1991 they got married and she shunned the Bollywood career and agreed to settle down at the time when she was at her peak of her career. After living happily for over 10 years in a marital bliss and with their two young children, the trouble started creeping in their love and relationship. And becoming proud parents of two children there were reports of Saif affair and Amrita Singh decided to end the marriage and is living separately since then. Though it is believed that Amrita a home bird in love with her family like any lady of the house the divorce was quite painful for both Saif and Amrita who were once totally besotted and for the sake of their children.
An Aquarian, Amrita Singh was born in a Sikh Family. Her mother Rukhsana Sultana was a Political activist and her father was Army Officer Shivinder Singh Virk from Feudal Family. Amrita is the great grand daughter of Sobha Singh , OBE of Hadali Sargodha , one of the builders of New Delhi and the Great-Grand Niece of the late Novelist Khuswant Singh. Her maternal grandmother Zarina Khan was the eldest sister of actress Begum Para. Amrita Singh attended the Modern School in New Delhi and is fluent in English, Punjabi, and Hindi.
Amrita Singh is one of the most attractive actresses of her time and perhaps the only one who has had the lead role with both Dharmendra and his son Sunny Deol and his proved to be an actress who is not afraid to take up challenging roles in her career. Amrita Singh left her career as an actress when she married Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan in 1991 even though he was years younger than her. In 1991, Amrita Singh married Saif in an Islami Wedding Ceremony and converted herself to Islam before marriage. Twelve years older than Said, the son of the former Indian test cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Patuadi , he is the ninth Nawab of Pataudi and Actress Sharmila Tagore. In 1993, Amrita Singh gave up her acting career for a family life with her husband and together they had two children. Daughter Sara Ali Khan born in September 1993 and a son born in 2001. After thirteen year of their marriage they divorced in 2004. The children continued to be with their mother . As her children grew up, she made it known that she intends to make a come back in Bollywood as well as will consider doing TV Programmes.
Amrita Singh’s career span started from 1983 to 2002 in between she had taken a sabbatical to raise her family and for her personal reasons. She had made her film debut with ‘ Betaab ’ in 1983 opposite to Sunny Deol , an immensely successful film . This was quickly followed by a succession of hit films such as “ Sunny ’ in 1984, “Mard” and “ Saaheb ” in 1985 followed by “ Chameli Ki Shaadi ” and “Naam ” in 1986 and “ Khudgarz ” in 1987 which did very well at the Box office. Amrita Singh made a successful pair in several films not only with Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dutt but also senior Actors like Anil Kapoor , Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff and has been one of the leading actresses in the 1980’s. She also played supporting negative roles besides playing leading roles in the films such as “ Raju Ban Gaya Gentelman ” in 1992, “ Aaina ” in 1993 for which she won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award . These successes did not dissuade her from her decision to retire from films to a family life and she quit acting in 1993. Amrita Singh returned to acting in 2002 with the film, ‘ 23rd March 1931 Shaheed ’ in which she plays the role of a mother to Bhagat Singh played by Bobby Deol. She joined the Television Industry with Ekta Kapoor’s family Drama Kavyanjali aired on StarPlus in 2005. She gained immense popularity for her negative role in this family serial. Amrita later that year won acclaim for her performance in yet another role for the film “Kalyug”. In 2007 she played the role of a mother to the gangster Maya Dolas in the Sanjay Gupta’ film, ‘Shootout at Lokhanwala ’ directed by Apoorva Lakhia.. Vivek Oberoi played the role of Maya Dolas. Later she appeared in the anthology film “Dus Kahaniyaan’ where she appeared in the short story “Pooranmasi” Continuing her journey in acting, Amrita Singh played a role in the film ‘ Kajraare’ in 2010 and also appeared in the film ‘ Aurangzeb ’ under the Yash Raj Films Banner where she paired with Jackie Shroff after almost a decade . In 2014 she was seen in the film ‘ 2 States ’ produced by Dharma Productions portraying the role of Co-star Arjun Kapoor’s mother. The film was released on 18th April 2014 and is based on the most popular book written by Chetan Bhagat. After four decades after the film Thikana in 1987, where they played lovers, Anil Kapoor and Amrita Singh will be paired again in Mubarakan directed by Anees Bazmee. This time however they are playing the role of sibling and she will be playing a mother to Arjun Kapoor once again.
