Divya Dutta is one of the most prominent supporting actresses in Bollywood at the present. After serving as a main lead heroine in many major Hindi and Punjabi productions she successfully shifted base to Supporting characters. Divya Dutta is one of the few actresses with a pan Indian appeal who has appeared in Hindi, Punjabi and also made her mark in Nepali cinema which itself is a rare feat for an Indian actress. Dutta is known for her subtle yet powerful depiction of strong female characters in Bollywood.
Divya Dutta was born to a Punjabi family, and had a difficult time in her childhood due to the early demise of her father resulting in her being brought up by her mother along with her brother. Divya Dutta did her studies from Sacred Heart Convent in Ludiana. She then went on to pursue a career in modelling for which she appeared in many Punjabi Television commercial subsequently leading to her film debut in 1994.
Divya Dutta was married to Lt Commander Sandeep Shergill in the year 2005 but the couple parted ways in a few years. A Suit had been file against the actress for Arbitration by The High Court based on complaints by her producer
Film debut and rise to prominence ( 1994- 1996) Divya Dutta made her film debut with the romantic drama Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna opposite actors like Brij Gopal and Shafi Inamdar in the lead. The movie had highly mixed reception at the time. She followed up with a major supporting role in the Aditya Pancholi starrer Suraksha in 1995 which was a huge success especially outside Indiamade her known among the Hindi audience. However she shot to instant fame in the year 1995 by donning the role of main heroine for Salman Khan’s drama film Veergati despite of its poor performance. Beginning of Supporting actress stint (1997) Divya Dutta then went about to be cast in a supporting role for the hit drama film Agni Saakshi alongside Jackie Shroff , Nana Patekar and Manisha Koirala in the lead. From there she went on to repeat her antics in two other major productions like in Govinda’s Chote Sarkar and Ram Aur Shyam all in the year 1996. Divya Dutta was at the point of times approached for trivial and background roles in movies like Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat , Daava alongside actors like Rani Mukerji and Akshay Kumar respectively. Back to back releases (1998) Divya Dutta had a busy time in the year 1998 where she was seen coming up with limited screen time in four major production such as in Gharwali Baharwali and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan . She in the meantime also played the female lead alongside Sharad Kapoor and Mukul Dev , which garnered her highly demoralizing reviews for being “plastic” in her portrayal. Divya Dutta also went on to be a part of Pamela Rook’s critically acclaimed Train to Pakistan, where she played a prostitute Major career break in Punjabi cinema and rise to prominence ( 1999- 2001) Divya Dutta in year 1999 made a detour to Punjabi cinema with the romantic drama Shaheed-e-Mohabbat Boota Singh opposite Gurdas Maan , the biographical movie had her playing the reel life spouse of soldier Boota Singh. The highly successful flick had her resurfacing with a masterstroke performance getting under the skin of the character showcasing the varied emotions of the part. Divya Dutta followed up by appearing in side-lined character in other Hindi productions like Samar, Rajaji and Tabaahi – The Destroyer all of which had nothing in particular for her to do other than be herself. Meanwhile she also made her Nepali debut with the romantic drama Basanti, after which she went on to appear in Vikram Bhatt’s suspense thriller Kasoor starring Aftab Shivdasani and Lisa Roy . The movie went on to fetch mixed reviews but was a hit. Array of releases ( 2002 -2004) Divya Dutta was a part of the Nepali production Maya Namara , after which she went on to be active again in Bollywood starting with ShahRukh starrer Shakti: The Power which too was a star studded affair.Divya Dutta was next seen in cold outings like Sur: The Melody of Life, Zindagi Khoobsoorat Hai, Bobby Deol’s 23rd March 1931: Shaheed. She also tried her hand at cracking her comic sensibilities through the year 2003 through Pran Jaaye Par Shaan Na Jaye which was a below par outing. She then had uneventful parts in movies like Baghban and LOC: Kargil. However Divya Dutta got her first Best Actress Award nomination at Star Guild Award’s for her performance in the movie Jogger’s Park in 2003. Divya Dutta had a major break in the year 2004 through Yash Chopra’s Shah Rukh Khan starrer cult romantic drama Veer Zaara, where she served a pivotal purpose as to constantly being the maid trying to unite the estranged lovers. The role was a mile stone in her career and got her noted among main stream Bollywood in the wink of an eye with much Awards and accolades coming her way. Divya Dutta’s next releases were Naam Gum Jaayega, Dubai Return, ShahRukh Khan’s Silsiilay and many more maintaining her career prospects. She also made her presence felt in the critically acclaimed movies like Netaji Subash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero and also played the central character in Sanyogita: The Bride in Red which got her International recognition. Her next major release after Umrao Jaan was the English production The Last Lear helmed by Rituparno Ghosh which fetched her rave reviews for her performance and was one of her career best. Divya Dutta then touched upon projects like Apne, Aaja Nachle, U Me Aur Hum, and Welcome to Sajjanpur and in the comedy Oh My God. Divya Dutta next big thing was a supporting role of a loafer trash collector girl in Abhishek Bachchan’s Delhi-6 which had her coming up with a memorable part which many critics cited as one of the strong points of the movie. She again returned to Punjabi films with outings like Mini Punjab, Paroksh ,Sukhmani : The Hope for Life with her recurring on screen Punjabi co-star Gurdas Maan which too got noted for her subtle acting ways . She continued the trend of fetching good reviews for her parts irrespective of highly negative reviews for the respective films like in Hello Darling and Malik Ek. She also did two international projects in the year 2010 like Heart Land and Hissss. Recent films ( 2010- 2016) Divya Dutta’s other major movies in the recent times are : The Lion of Punjab , Dangerous Ishq , Heroine , My Friend Pinto , Monica, Stanley Ka Dabba, Special 26 , Lootera, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag , Badlapur, Traffic , etc.
