Rishi Kapoor was born in a Punjabi Hindu family Chembur , a suburb in Mumbai to veteran actor Raj Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor. He did his schooling at Champion School Mumbai and Mayo College Ajmer. He has two brothers and two sister, Both brothers Randhir Kapoor and Rajeev Kapoor are also actors.
Rishi Kapoor married actress Neetu Singh on 22nd January 1980. The couple have two children, One son who is a well known very famous actor Ranbir Kapoor and daughter Riddhima who is married to Sahani . Rishi Kapoor comes from a typical film industry background with his paternal grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor was a renowned actor of his times. Not only his brothers are well known in the industry but he is also the paternal uncle to the duo sisters Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor . His paternal Uncles, father’s brothers Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor and his Maternal Uncle Prem Nath are also famous film personalities. The Kapoor Khaandan as they are called are one of the first families in the Tinsel town of Bollywood. Rishi Kapoor broke a million hearts when he declared to marry his love the beautiful Neetu Singh. He was the chocolate boy of Bollywood . Their amazing chemistry on-screen blossomed into love that was very visible in their movies that they did together. Media wrote the magic that they created on the screen was not just Good Acting but it was their True Love that one could see in their performance. Neetu Singh and Chintu aka Rishi Kapoor started dating while they were just starting their career in the film Industry. They came together for the first time together for the film Zehreela Insaan in 1974. The wonderful fairytale had its own share of twists and turns as the Kapoor Khandan expected their daughters-in-law to leave the film industry after marriage and Neetu Singh was at her peak of her career, one of the best actresses during the same period. Once she had made up her mind , it is said she has returned all the signing amount and she took the plunge to leave the industry for good. In the late 1990’s the insiders in the industry claimed that Rishi Kapoor was turning into an alcoholic. Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh returned to the Silver Screen as a couple after 30 years in the film Love Aaj Kal. The evergreen and the heart throb couple successfully played the role of middle class parents in Do Dooni Chaar. They also appeared as husband wife Cop pair in the film Besharam along with their son Ranbir Kapoor. Their daughter Riddhima is a fashion designer and is happily married and settled, whereas their son Ranbir Kapoor is one of the hottest actors of the Industry. Rishi Kapoor is passionate about cars and his favourite car is the Audi R8 being one of his car collections.
Rishi Kapoor debuted in his father's 1970 film, Mera Naam Joker playing a child artist;s role. In 1973, his father produced and directed the film Bobby a Blockbuster film in which he acted as the young chocolate faced in the lead role opposite to Dimple Kapadia. It was a teenage love story and the film did extremely well at the Box office. During that period, only 11 of the 51 Solo Hero films were successful at the Box office and 25 of the 41 were multi-hero films out of which Rishi Kapoor got 51 films as the solo lead hero’s role between the year 1973 to 2000 but 40 were box office flops and he managed to give 11 superhits which were Bobby , Laila Majnu, Rafoo Chakkar, Sargam, Karz , Prem Rog , Nagina , Honeymoon, Banjaran , Heena and Bol Radha Bol. His last film in the romantic role was for Heena directed by his brother Randhir Kapoor and his Father Raj Kapoor . In Prem Granth a film produced by the three Kapoor brothers, Rishi Kapoor , Randhir Kapoor and Rajeev Kapoor and directed by Rajeev Kapoor. From here onwards he moved on to doing supporting roles in the year 2000’s. He has since then appeared in a number of films starting with Yeh Hai Jalwa in 2002 followed by Hum Tum , Fanaa in 2006, Namastey London in 2007, Love Aaj Kal in 2009, Patiala House in 2010 which did fairly well at the Box office and each of his roles in these films marked a significant exposure. During this period he also appeared in the British films Don’t Stop Dreaming in 2007 and Sambar Salsa in 2008. He reunited on screen with his wife Neetu Singh in the film Do Dooni Chaar in 2010.. In 2009 , he also acted in the film Chintuji in which he plays himself. He appeared in a villainous role in Agneepath and the multi-starrer Housefull 2 where he appeared with his brother Randhir Kapoor for the first time after the film Khazana in mid 80’s. he made a cameo appearance in Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan along with his wife. He received the National Film Award for his debut as a Child Artist in his father’s Mera Naam Joker in 1970. In 1973 for his role in the film Bobby he won his first Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1974. Since then he has played roles as a romantic lead in 92 films between 1973 and 2000 . He was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2008.. He appeared as a romantic lead opposite to his wife Neetu Singh in twelve films between the years 1973 and 1981 . Some of the films that he acted in various roles besides being a romantic hero, he is known for his versatile roles in his films like Deewana , Damini , Eena Meena Deeka which were success. He got the lead roles again in dual hero films like Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin , Badalte Rishtey Aap ke Deewane , Saagar, Chandni , Damini , Gurudev , Coolie , Zamana and many others. After several box office flop films, in 1999 he directed the film Aa Ab Laut Chalen, His last film as a romantic lead was delayed by 5 years . Some of his best films with his wife Neetu Singh which were successful and super hits were Khel Khel Mein, Kabhi Kabhie , Amar Akbar Anthony, Pati Patni Aur Who, Duniya Meri Jeb Mein , Zehreela Insaan , Zinda Dil, Doosra Aadmi, Anjane Mein , Jhoota Kahin Ka and Rafoo Chakkar for which he is remembered doing memorable roles.
