ShahRukh Khan’s Josh made Sharad Kapoor immortal After a string of flops Sharad Kapoor’s career was in doldrums but call it pure destiny he won the crucial role of Prakash Sharma, the ‘tapori’ gang leader of Bichoo Gang in Mansoor Khan’s film Josh. Readers would be surprised to know that Mansoor Khan, cousin of Aamir Khan had agreed to direct the film for Ratan Jain of Venus Records & Tapes because he wanted to cast Aamir Khan and ShahRukh Khan together in the film. The role of Max, leader of Eagle gang was assigned for ShahRukh Khan and King Khan had agreed to do the film. The opponent Bichoo Gang leader role was penned for Aamir Khan and Mr Perfectionist had given his nod but when he read the script he found the character of Max (played by SRK) more charismatic hence he opted out and in his place Mansoor took Sharad Kapoor with a heavy heart but when Sharad came in front of camera, Mansoor was overwhelmed by Sharad’s brilliant performance! The role won Sharad Kapoor much appreciation. It also fetched him Filmfare nomination as Best Villain but lost to Suniel Shetty who was awarded for Dhadkan. The film gave a new lease of life to Sharad Kapoor and his film career took a new turn.
Sharad Kapoor run away to Mumbai from Kolkata to become actor Since his school days Sharad Kapoor had penchant for acting. Sharad Kapoor married granddaughter of West Bengal Ex Chief Minister Sharad Kapoor met Koel Basu through some common friends in a party. However after that they lost touch until, Sharad Kapoor happened to meet her again at The Oberoi Grand Hotel as an employee. Koel had done a course in hospitality and was working as manager at the reputed 5-star hotel. They recognized each other and the both fell in love at first sight. Sharad could not control his emotions and took her phone number which she shared without hassle. The same evening Sharad opened his heart over the phone and proposed for marriage. He gave him a power packed role of a jilted lover, in his film Dastak (1996), who kills everybody who comes in between his love. The role was on the lines of ShahRukh Khan in Darr. Hence Sharad Kapoor had great challenge to either equal or suppress King Khan. It was a great opportunity for Sharad Kapoor to display histrionics and make waves in Bollywood as ShahRukh Khan did with Darr! The other attraction of the film was Miss Sushmita Sen, who had just won the Miss Universe title and was making headlines. Mahesh Bhatt, had specially crafted a role for Sushmita Sen. In the film she played herself i.e. a Miss Universe who is hunted by a psychopath (Sharad Kapoor) who is madly in love with her and is so obsessed that he unleashes terror in her life. The film was not a big hit hence it could give Sharad Kapoor the kind of appreciation that ShahRukh Khan got after Darr, nevertheless, the film did won rave reviews and brought Sharad Kapoor in limelight in Bollywood. Mahesh Bhatt made Sharad Kapoor hero in his film Tamanna Mahesh Bhatt continued his affection for Sharad Kapoor and made him a hero in his next film Tamanna opposite his daughter Pooja Bhatt. The film was a sensitive drama focused on girl child issue. The film depicted an emotional drama about a eunuch’s love for an abandoned baby girl, whom he rescues and brings-up as his own baby. The movie was an average hit. It helped Sharad Kapoor sign many films like Achena Atithi, Ankhon Mein Tum Ho, Iski Topi Uske Sar, Sar Ankhon Par, Kahani Kismat Ki, Trishakti, Radheshyam, Khauff etc but alas none of the film could run at box office!
