Sushma Seth did her schooling at Convent of Jesus & Mary, New Delhi followed by, Teacher’s training Diploma in Home Science at the Irwin college Delhi. She also did her Associate in Science Diploma at Briarcliff college, New York, later Bachelor of Fine Arts from Carneige Mellon, Pittsburgh United States of America. Highly educated Sushma had been nominated for the Filmfare award in 1985 for the film Tawaif.
Sushma Seth was born and brought up in Delhi, is the older sister of Manipuri Dancer Charu Sila Mathur. Her husband Dhruv Seth has always been very supportive towards her career and always gave her a bouquet on the opening night of her stage plays. Sushma has her priorities set for her family and work and when at home she is complete homemaker, a mother etc. and at work, she is a complete actress and does not mix both. Her career would have never been so successful had it not been for her husband and family. Without their support she wouldn’t have achieved so much in her career. She was travelling to and fro from Delhi and Mumbai in the early for her shootings. In early 2000’s Sushma started working for an NGO called Arpana directing plays and dance dramas and a famous one on Kalpana Chawla (Astronaut) titled ‘ Sitaron Ke Paas’.
Sushma is married to Dhruv Seth a businessman and her older daughter Divya Seth is a top actress on tv and films. Sushma has always been a sophisticated lady and Maestros like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Ali Akbar Khan (Santoor) have visited and performed at their home.
She started her career in 1950 in a play along with Joy Michael, Roshan Seth and a few others. In 1964 was a founder of a Delhi based Theatre group called ‘YATRIK’. Her first Hindi film was Junoon directed by Shyam Benegal in 1978.Sushma got famous in her role as DADI in the pioneering TV soap ‘Hum Log’ which ran for a year from 1984 to 1985. Notable directors like Ram Gopal Varma, Dev Raj Ankur, Manish Joshi Bismil, Chander Shekhar Sharma have worked with her. She has played a mother’s role for many actors like Rishi Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Anil Kapoor, Preity Zinta and grandmother to many actors. She is remembered for her character roles in the films.
Sushma has acted in multi star cast films like Prem Rog, Chandni, Deewana, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kal Ho Na Ho and appeared in a Punjabi movie too titled Chann Pardesi (1980). She has acted in a famous sitcom named ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh’ as a Matriarch directed by Anand Mahendroo. From Tv shows like Milee, kaun, Ye Hui Na Baat Vansh to films like Shaandar, Student of the Year has acted with almost all top stars.
Sushma Seth is a versatile actress, singer, Painter, Teacher of Speech and Drama, a children’s theatre activist. She has played lead roles in about 80 to 100 plays in Urdu, Hindi, English. Received the highest honor for excellence from Briarcliff college and was also crowned May Queen by the President of the student council.
Sushma has won several awards like the Rashtriya Priyadarshini award, Bharat Nirman award, best actress award from Sahitya Kala Parishad award, Lifetime achievement award from Chamanlal Society, Kalpana Chawla(astronaut) excellence award, Sangeet Akademi Tagore award, The National Vayoshreshtha samaan award from ministry of social justice and empowerment for creative arts.
One of her experiences was during the shooting of Junoon in Lucknow was that they were pampered by having the best of Mangoes, Kakori Kebabs and treated like a state priority.
Her film career stretched from 1978 with her first film, Junoon and her last film was Noor in 2017 and has acted in over 75 to 80 in Hindi films.
Her television career began in 1980.
