The story of the movie is set during India’s partition in 1947. A young Parsi crippled girl named Lenny narrates the story of that time and all that she saw. Her parents love her a lot and keep her protected from all that is happening outside due to the communal tension as a result of the partition. A beautiful Hindu Ayah named Shanta, played by Nandita Das looks after her and loves her as much as her parents. Lenny is also very fond of her. An ice-candy man in the vicinity named Dil Navaz, played by Aamir Khan and a local masseur named Hassan, played by Rahul Khanna, are both Muslims and in love with her. She however gives her heart to Hassan.
One day Dil sees Hassan and Shanta getting intimate and kills him in a fit of rage. Things get all the more worse for the community. Shanta is now in fear of her life. The movie is directed by Deepa Mehta and produced by Anne Masson and Deepa Mehta. The music is composed by A R Rehman and the lyrics are written by Javed Akhtar. The star cast includes Maia Sethna and Shabana Azmi. The cinematography is by Giles Nuttgens.
