Krish, played by Arjun Kapoor is a Punjabi boy who studies at IIM Ahmedabad. There he meets Ananya, played by Alia Bhatt, a Tamilian girl. They both become friends and eventually fall in love. They graduate college and start working in different companies. Krish tries to impress Ananya’s parents by helping dad make his first PowerPoint presentation. He then gives tuitions to her younger brother and then helps her mother fulfill her dream of singing at a concert.
They travel together to meet Krish’s parents but his mother doesn’t give her a warm welcome and keeps talking about her friend’s daughter for Krish. Ananya too impresses his parents by speaking out when at a cousin’s wedding the boy asks for dowry. Now both of them decide to let their parents meet. They arrange a lunch where both the mothers have an argument and fall out. Krish and Ananya too have fight after that. They decide to go their separate ways as their families will never get along.
Krish becomes a workaholic and miserable and starts seeing a psychiatrist. Later it is revealed that Krish doesn’t have a good rapport with his dad and both are at logger heads. His father eventually goes to Chennai to meet her parents and convinces to get them married. All ends well and Ananya delivers twin boys after a few years.
