Dia, played by Madhuri Dixit, has migrated to the US and is settled there with her daughter Radha. An avid dancer before she left, Dia gets the news that her dance guru, Makarand is seriously ill. She rushes back to Shamli, India to see him but unfortunately he has already passed, leaving behind the Ajanta theatre for her to look after. She also learns that some corrupt politicians want to demolish the popular theatre to build a shopping mall in its place. She goes to the local MP Uday Singh to stop demolition but he proposes the challenge that if she can put up a successful dance show with the people of Shamli he will abort the demolition project.

Dia decides to put up a musical play of Laila Majnu and scouts for talents on the streets and everywhere in Shamli with a lot of struggle and challenges. When thugs come to burn down the set of the theatre, she reasons with them and tells the politician behind it that she will help him win if she gets his help in finding talent for her show. Her idea works and in no time people from the village join in. The play is a huge success and Ajanta is saved from demolition. Meanwhile Uday and Dia fall in love.

The movie is directed by Anil Mehta and produced by Aditya Chopra. The music is composed by Salim-Sulaiman.
