Nisha is an orphan adopted by her relatives and lives with her cousin Indu and her mother. A wealthy man Kabir is attracted to both Indu and Nisha but chooses to marry Nisha as she is more conservative and has traditional Indian values, compared to Indu who is modern in her approach. Indu is however in love with Kabir and is heartbroken when he marries her cousin. They soon settle into marital bliss and Nisha gets pregnant. Meanwhile Kabir has a philandering behavior and has affairs with many women without the knowledge of his wife. Nisha’s pregnancy is considered high risk by her doctor, thus Indu’s mother sends her to look after Nisha as she is bed ridden. In the coming months Indu comes close to Kabir and starts an affair with him. Soon Nisha gives birth to a baby girl and also comes to know of her cousin’s and husband’s affair.
She is devastated and leaves home, giving her daughter’s responsibilities to the house maid. Nisha starts her writing career and meets with another writer named Alok. Soon her daughter grows up and Kabir and Indu’s relationship is on the brink of end. They have severe financial trouble and are not able to sponsor their daughter’s marriage. That is when Nisha gives her book publishing rights to Kabir and tells him not to
reveal her identity to their daughter. Meanwhile Alok confesses his love to Nisha and puts sindoor in her forehead, officiating their marriage. The film is directed and produced by J Om Prakash. The music is composed by Rajesh Roshan. The screenplay and dialogues are written by Achala Nagar. The star cast includes Smita Patil, Rajesh Khanna and Tina Munim.
