David D’Costa, played by Amitabh Bachchan lives a hand to mouth existence in Chennai with his loving wife Mary, played by Jayaprada. David thinks very highly of Chaturvedi, who is a member of parliament. He looks up to him so much so that he is ready to do anything for him. He takes Mary to meet him and with his blessings name their son James. One day while at work, David is arrested by the police and imprisoned not knowing what crime he has committed. He is later bailed out by his friend Mahesh, played by Anupam Kher.
David reaches home to get some devastating news. His wife Mary has committed suicide and left a note, saying Chaturvedi raped her. David’s world comes crashing down. In a fit of rage David confronts Chaturvedi but is interrupted by Dr. Verma, played by Bharat Kapoor and inspector Roop Kumar, played by Dalip Tahil. All the evidence from Mary’s death is destroyed and he is charged with her murder and sentenced to 24 years jail.
Mahesh is left to care for James. When David returns 24 years later, he is stunned to see a changed Mahesh and his son who is now a CID inspector and named Vijay. David goes to avenge his wife’s death and his wrongful sentencing, but Vijay who is unaware that David is his biological father stops him. The movie is directed by K. Bhagyaraj and produced by T. Rama Rao and A. Poornachandra Rao. The music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
