Abhimaan a 1973 film released on 27th July, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and produced by him along with Rajinder Singh Bedi, Biresh Chatterjee, Nabendu Ghosh, Mohan N. Sippy and Biren Tripathy. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, Om Prakash, Asrani and Bindu.

 

‘Abhimaan’ which means pride is a musical family drama, which is perhaps remembered for its very popular songs sung by playback singers Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar.  A trademark of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film that is emotional and family oriented with a story of a marriage that can disrupt due to jealousy, pride and ego.

Subir essayed by Amitabh Bachchan is a professional and a popular singer who has soared high in his singing career.  Unexpectedly during his visit to his uncle’s home in a village he comes across Uma, a sweet girl who has a sweet voice and he falls in love with her and her singing.  With the consent of his uncle and her father they marry and he brings his new bride to Bombay.   He goes back with his singing and also wants Uma to sing and start a career.  Uma on his instance starts singing and becomes more successful than her husband resulting in jealousy from Subir.  His ego is hurt and he starts behaving indifferently.   The film reaches a turning point when the situation becomes sensitive and they separate.  Uma due to the turmoil also has a miscarriage. Due to which she goes into a depression and shocked state and returns to her father in the village.

The film was a masterpiece by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The film ends with the couple coming back together again in an emotional reunion when Subir invites Uma on the stage to sing together and he has realised his mistake. Bindu unlike her vamp roles, for this film she has  played the understanding and sympathetic friend to the couple.
