Ayan Sangar, played by Ranbir Kapoor is a talented singer and has gained enough recognition for singing unique non-filmy songs. He is an amateur lover and tries to show he knows a lot about lovemaking. He happens to befriend a girl called Alizeh, played by Anushka Sharma at a club in London and in a little buzzed state they start getting physically close but it turns out to become funny and Alizeh keeps giggling. They decide to not pursue a relationship and just be friends.
They both learn that their respective partners are cheating on them and decide to break up with them; Ayan with Lisa, played by Lisa Hayden and Faisal, played by Imran Abbas and decide to holiday together in stead. Ayan soon realizes that he has fallen in love with Alizeh but she has no feelings for him and considers him to be only a friend.
Meanwhile Alizeh meets DJ Ali, played by Fawad Khan and falls in love with him and they decide to get married after a while. She cuts all communication with Ayan knowing he ha sbecome obsessed with her. In a heartbroken state Ayan meets an older woman Saba, played by Aishwarya Rai and has an affair with her. He realizes that he still misses Alizeh and tries to contact her but to no avail.
Later after a few when Ayan meets Alizeh at a restaurant, he notices that she has gone bald and upon asking the reason she confesses that she has cancer and has a few more months to live. They decide they could only be the best of friends.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is directed by Karan Johar and produced by Apoorva Mehta, Hiroo Yash Johar and Karan Johar. The music is composed by Pritam.
