In the Island of Mandwa, schoolteacher Dinanath Chauhan, played by Chetan Pandit is looked up to by the students and the villagers. One day a school girl is raped and murdered in one of the classrooms and the teacher is framed by Kancha, played by Sanjay Dutt who is jealous of his popularity and wants to tarnish his reputation. Dinanath is then hanged on a tree to death by Kancha along with the villagers in front of his young son Vijay. This deeply disturbs Vijay as a child and his pregnant mother is devastated.
Vijay’s mother delivers a baby girl and they start rebuilding their lives when Vijay becomes attracted towards the work of Rauf Lala, played by Rishi Kapoor and an enemy of Kancha. He gets into his gang and manages to kill a corrupt officer. Vijay’s mother furious at his behavior disowns him and leaves with her daughter. Vijay now only has revenge for his father’s murder in his mind. He grows up to be a tough henchman for Rauf Lala and becomes his trusted aid.
He foils the plan of Kancha to start a drug smuggling business and gets into the good books of Rauf Lala. He thus hands Vijay the territory of Dongri as a reward for his efforts. Later he pretends to take a bullet accidentally that was meant for Rauf Lala’s son Mazhar, which was in fact his conspiracy and gains even more of his trust. At Mazhar’s wedding he takes him out of the house at some pretext and gets him killed. Rauf Lala unable to bear the news of his dead son is admitted to the hospital. Meanwhile Vijay takes over his entire business and even meets Kancha to hand over Mandwa.
Rauf Lala later learns the truth about Vijay and kidnaps his sister to be sold but Vijay rescues her in time and kills Rauf Lala. Later after a long battle, destroys Mandwa and hangs Kancha from the same tree he hung his father. The movie is directed by Karan Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar and Hiroo Yash Johar. The music is composed by Ajay-Atul.
