In a drought striken land, the villagers have been praying to the rain god Indra to give them rain to sustain life. Paravasu, played by Jackie Shroff has been performing the Yajna or fire sacrifice for seven years to soothe the god of rain Indra, played by Amitabh Bachchan. His brother Arvasu, played by Milind Soman, loves a tribal girl called Nittilai, played by Sonali Kulkarni but she wants her family to approve of their marriage. Arvasu and Paravasu’s father suspects Paravasu’s wife, Vishaka, played by Raveena Tandon, of having an affair with Yavakri, played by Nagarjuna. One day Nittilai and Arvasu even catch them making love in the woods.
Vishaka in rage admits that she was with Yavakri to their father and he curses her and calls the demons to kill Yavakri. He waits for the demons but Vishaka pleads him to go to his father’s ashram, which will save him but he refuses. The demon kills him and she asks Arvasu to cremate him. In the meantime it delays his alliance with Nittilai and her father makes her marry another tribesman. Later Paravasu kills his father but blames it on Arvasu and beats him. Nittilai comes to his rescue but is killed by her husband for dishonor of the tribe. Arvasu prays to God Indra and asks to bring back Nittilai but that is not possible. He then asks god to set the demon free and then there is heavy rain.
The movie is directed by Arjun Sajnani and produced by Kashish Bhatnagar. The film is written by Girish Karnad and The cinematography is by Anil Mehta. The music is composed by Sandesh Shandilya and Taufiq Qureshi.
