Amar Akbar Anthony is an action comedy emotional family film of 1977 directed and produced by Manmohan Desai and written by Kader Khan. The film has a multistar cast of all top actors of the time, Vinod Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Shabana Azmi, Parveen Babi in the lead roles along with supporting stars Pran and Nirupa Roy.
The plot focuses on three brothers who are separated in their childhood and how they grow up in three different upbringings and follow three different faiths, Hindu, Muslim and Christian.
A happy family with a couple Kishanlal(Pran) and Bharati(Nirupa Roy) and their three young sons. Kishanlal unknowing works as a chauffeur for an underworld crime leader Robert. Robert convinces his driver Kishenlal to take the blame of a hit-n-run case that he has committed by offering financial aid his assurance that his family is well looked after. However, when Kishanlal turns himself in the prison, his family comes to streets. His wife Bharati suffers from Tuberculous, while his three sons get separated. The elder one Amar (Vinod Khanna) is found by a kind hearted Hindu police officer who raises him to become a Police Inspector. The second son Anthony is found unconscious outside a church and the priest of the church takes him in and treats him like his son and raises with Christian values. The youngest son Akbar Allahabadi is raised as a Muslim and becomes a Qawwali singer. Bharati in search of her son’s attempts suicide and gets struck by lightning and loses her eyesight. Kishenlal returns to find his family missing and goes to Robert seeking help and finds out the state of his family in his absence. Enraged he decides to teach Robert a lesson after the humiliation he goes through at his hands. He escapes with Robert’s car loaded with smuggled gold and is untraceable to Robert’s men or the Police and they presume he is dead.
The film goes through lot of dramatic and emotional scenes that also includes romance of the three sons with their love angle and with some light humor and comedy. The film ends on a happy note with the three of them getting married to their lovers and they unite with their parents .
