Amar Prem which means Immortal Love is a romantic film of 1972 directed by Shakti Samanta and is a remake of the Bengali film Nishi Padma released in 1970.  The film is directed by Arabinda Mukherjee .

Amar Prem is an emotional love story that portrays the decline of human values and presents strong relationships between a young boy who is ill treated by his step mother and turns to a prostitute who becomes his friend and bestows a love of a mother.

Pushpa the prostitute (essayed by Sharmila Tagore) is thrown out by her husband and is not welcome back in her parental home is sold to a brothel in Kolkota by her wicked uncle where she meets a lonely businessman Anand Babu (Rajesh Khanna) who starts visiting her regularly and she becomes her exclusive visitor and love blossoms between the two.  However, they do not confess their love which is more out of respect for each other.  Both Anand Babu and Pushpa shower lot of love on little Nandu like their son.   Nandu’s parents decide to leave the place and a heartbroken Nandu leaves Pushpa and moves on in life.  Anand Babu also due to family pressures tops visiting Pushpa.

Years later, Nandu is now an engineer posted in the same town while Pushpa in her old age has taken a job of a maid servant in a home where she is ill treated by her employers.  Anand Babu happens to visit the village and decides to check on his old friends and Pushpa . Both inquire the whereabouts of their dear Nandu and are thrilled to know he is residing in the same village as them.  Nandu remembers Pushpa’s unconditional love for him during his growing years and is also very hurt by the ill treatment by her employers. He addresses her as Maa and takes her to his home.  A story of the son who is reunited with his lost mother.
