Anjuman works at a chikan embroidery factory along with many workers. She is sadden by the plight of the workers and how they are being exploited by the owners. Banke Nawab is a phony poet who has his eyes on her and wants to have her. But she is not interested in him and is in love with her neighbor Sajjid who is wealthy but meek. She is given momentum by her doctor friend Suchitra to fight for the rights of the workers. She is then forced to marry Banke but on the wedding day she rejects him in front of everyone. This angers him to no end.
Banke then takes his revenge by starting a riot among all the muslims in the factory and town. Anjuman however refuses to give up the fight and becomes a social activist. This gets the attention of Sajjid who begins to now like her. The film is directed by Muzaffar Ali and produced by Shoba Doctor. The music is composed by Khayyam. The star cast includes Farooque Sheikh, Shabana Azmi and Rohini Hattangadi.
