Hari is a farmer living a hand to mouth existence in a remote
village in Bengal. He lives with his wife, two sons, brother Bolai
and widowed aunt Kalidashi and her daughter Panchi. Hari is a
naïve man and almost never questions the atrocities he is been
put through by the Jotdars. A young Jotdar named
Bibuthibushan changes the laws of the Borgadars and makes
them more stringent. This puts a lot of pressure on people like
Hari who swaddle in poverty even further. Bolai disagrees with
the arrangement and revolts but Hari stops him and asks him
to follow suit. Soon Hari wants to get his sister married and
asks Bhibuthibhushan for a loan. So the latter asks that he not
register his Bargadari rights with the government.
Meanwhile Bolai leaves for Calcutta, disgusted at the plight of
the villagers. There is becomes a political goon. KAlidashi
comes to Calcutta a few months later and begins working as a
house maid while Panchi gets lured into a prostitution racket.
The latter becomes the mistress to a wealthy man and enjoys
the material luxuries it offers. Soon Hari is tired of the
oppression the Jotdars have dished out and files a complain
against them in the district court. His whole life and family is
then taken away from him one by one. The film is directed by
Shyam Benegal. The star cast includes Om Puri, Srilla
Mazumdar, Victor Banerji and Noni Ganguli.
