Raj lives a wealthy lifestyle with his widower father Gopaldas. Being motherless has made Raj very lonely and meek. He thus moves away from his father and stays close by in a separate mansion and visits his father often. One day he meets with a girl named Rupa and falls in love with her. He comes to know that she is an orphan and offers her to stay with him. Few days later Gopal Das invites Raj over and arranges his marriage to his business partner’s daughter. He however refuses and wants to marry Rupa. Gopal Das then visits Rupa and requests him
that their financial situation is bad and only this marriage will get him the money he needs. Rupa understands this and commits suicide. Raj is then forced to marry his dad’s friend’s daughter. The latter however dies during childbirth, giving birth to son Vijay. Raj then turn heavily to drinking. Gopal Das unable to see his son’s plight sends Vijay abroad to finish his studies. Raj one day meets a girl on the streets who resembles Rupa. He comes to know that she is Deepa and is a dancer at a hotel, and begins to visit her more. Gopal Das comes to know this and gets the two married. Deepa however asks all her property be transferred to her before marriage. Things and her behavior change drastically after the marriage takes place. The film is directed and produced by Sohanlal Kanwar. The music is composed by R D Burman. The star cast includes Rajesh Khanna, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Madhuri Dixit, Om Prakash, Iftekhar, Bharat Bhushan, Om Shivpuri, Rajan Sippy, Pinchoo Kapoor and Komal Mahuvakar.
