Bairaag is a 1976 film directed by Asit Sen and produced by the duo Mushir-Riaz, starring Dilip Kumar who plays the triple role in the film . Co-starring also are Saira Banu, Leena Chandavarkar, Ruma Guha Thakurta, Prem Chopra, Helen, Sujit Kumar, Madan Puri, Kader Khan, Asit Sen and Sachin.
The film starts with Kailash (Dilip Kumar) losing his eyesight after a car accident. His wife gives birth to twin sons, out of which one is blind. Before his wife regains her consciousness, he asks the doctor to get rid of the blind baby as he does not want his son to grow up being blind and face struggles in his life. The doctor’s wife has no heart to kill the child and leaves him in a temple on the outskirts. The temple priest next morning finds the child on the temple door step. They raise him and call him Bholenath.
Here Kailash is guilt ridden for his act of cruelty over a blind child and confesses to his wife who dies of shock. Kailash raises the other son Sanjay (Dilip Kumar) who turns out be a rich spoilt brat. Sanjay is engaged to Sonia (Leena Chandavarkar) but continues to have a clandestine affair with Lucy(Helen). Lucy is using this relationship on the instance of her dangerous boyfriend Grasco( Madan Puri) and her greedy brother Kunwal ( Prem Chopra). Kunwal agrees to marry a country girl Tara (Saira Banu) for a dowry. But she is in love with the simpleton Bholenath who is poor and blind. He wants Tara to marry Kunwal, so decides to steal the money from the temple but his pet snake stops him by biting and thus he realizes his mistake and goes to the city where he is mistaken for Sanjay who has gone into hiding with Lucy. She leaves Grasco with a huge sum of money but is found dead and the money goes missing too. Sanjay is held as the suspect. The case gets resolved with the real culprit being caught and the brothers uniting with each other and their father and they marry the love of their life.
