Bajirao, played by Ranveer Singh gets chosen as the new Peshwa. His wife is Kashibai, played by Priyanka Chopra who is visited after a few years by her widowed friend whos husband was killed by Bajirao. She predicts that Kashibai will also long for her husband just like she does her own. She is upset by her statement. Meanwhile an envoy enters Bajirao’s tent and requests his help. She is Mastani, played by Deepika Padukone, who is the daughter of a Hindu Rajput king.
Bajirao and Mastani together fight the invaders and her father invites him to spend holi at their palace in Bundelkhand. They end up falling in love and he gives her his dagger. He departs for Pune and is welcomed by an elated Kashibai, who has no idea what has transpired in Bundelkhand. Mastani eager to confess her love travels to Pune to meet Bajirao. But his mother treats her rudely and makes her stay with the courtesans. Mastani even dances for Bajirao in his court but his mother says that she is better off a dancer than a daughter-in –law.
Bajirao meet Mastani and tells her that he is already married and his court will never give her any respect, despite his pleads, Mastani accepts him and Bajirao declares her to be his second wife. A distraught and pregnant Kashibai hears of the news that even Mastani is pregnant. They both deliver a baby boy but the priest refuses to have a naming ceremony for Mastani’s child as he is illegitimate. Bajirao names his son Shamsher Bahadur and Kashibai’s son is named Raghunath.
After many years, when Bajirao goes to the battlefield to fight the Nizam, his mother and son confine Mastani and chain her. Bajirao dies from his battle injuries while Mastani dies in captivity. The movie is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Kishore Lulla and SLB. The music is composed by SBL.
