Born in Darjeeling, Barfi is deaf and mute from birth but has a charming and lovable personality. He is well liked by all in his village but is despised by the local inspector for creating trouble every now and then and making him run around. One day he happens to meet Shruti Ghosh, played by Iliana D’Cruz, who has come with her single mother to Darjeeling and is engaged to Ranjeet. Her mother has already lost her love at one point in her life, when she was deceived by him and had to forcefully get married to Shruti’s dad thus she is strictly against love marriages.

 

Shruti and Barfi develop a sweet friendship over time and slowly begin to fall in love. One day her mother gets to know of her affair and reminds her she will not be able to handle his disabilities and poverty. Shruti thus marries Ranjeet and moves to Kolkatta. Barfi’s father takes ill and he has no money for his father’s treatment so he decides to kidnap his wealthy autistic friend Jhilmil for a ransom. He then take the money and before giving it to the doctor learns that he has already passed away. A miserable Barfi tries to take Jhilmil back to her house but she refuses and wants to stay with him. He takes her to Kolkata and takes care of her.

 

One day he meets Shruti who is unhappy with her marriage and they are happy to see other. Later Shruti realizes that Barfi has fallen in love with Jhilmil and moves out of their lives. Barfi and Jhilmil finally confess their love for each other and get married. The movie is directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. The music is composed by Pritam.
