“Bayamariya Brammai” is a crime thriller film directed and written by Rahul Kabali, and produced by Jagadish and Rahul Kabali under 69 MM Films. Starring JD Chakravarthy, Guru Somasundaram, and Harish Uthaman, the film enters the mind of a serial killer with a gripping dialogue.

The story is of “Jagadish”, who has killed 96 people in 25 years, and Kabilan, a successful writer. They are at the opposite ends of prison bars, discussing life, death, and ethics. While Kabilan witnessed his first book hitting the press in 1987, Jagadish committed his first murder in 1978. Their paths couldn't have been more divergent, yet Jagadish tries to establish parallels between the two.

Throughout the course of the story, the film flashes back to Jagadish's past, revealing what he killed and why he killed them. Despite the gruesome information, however, the audience is never quite certain who Jagadish is. His reasons for doing what he did are never made clear, so it is difficult to grasp or feel bad for him.

The film takes a bold risk by being more concept and style than character. This may leave the viewer feeling detached from the story, but it makes the mystery and suspense feel more authentic. The directors are able to create something fresh, even though they fall short on an emotional level.

One of the film’s most interesting elements is the inclusion of an androgynous character, a rare representation in Tamil cinema. In a creative choice similar to Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of Bob Dylan in I’m Not There, a woman plays one stage of a key character’s life, adding a layer of depth and unpredictability.

With its interactive dialogue, tense atmosphere, and provocative themes, “Bayamariya Brammai” is a film that goes against the conventions of conventional storytelling. It may not give easy answers, but it certainly leaves a mark.
