During the 1947 India partition there was widespread chaos and religious violence in Punjab. Due to the violence in British India, Milkha, played by Farhan Akhtar loses his parents. He is goes to Delhi and stays in a make shift refugee camp. He makes lots of friends his age and passes his time stealing with them. He falls in love with Biro, played by Sonam Kapoor, at first sight, but she warns him to live his life honestly and not by stealing.

 

Milkha joins the army and during one of the running competitions comes first. The top ten winners receive milk, 2 eggs and excused from the regular exercise routine. He gets selected into the service commission but is beaten up by the senior boys just before the selection of the Indian team for Olympics. He runs even though he is injured and wins the race and breaks the national record.

 

In 1956, during the Melbourne Olympics, Milka is besotted by his Australian coach’s granddaughter who he has a one-night stand with. Next day he feels exhausted and is unable to win the race. He realizes his mistake and repents. He later trains hard and breaks the world record of 400 m race in 45.80 seconds. The Then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, encourages Milkha to lead the Indian team in a friendly race in Pakistan with Abdul Khaliq. He goes to a village there and is fogged with memories of his parent’s murder.

 

At the race just when Abdul seems like he will defeat all others, Milkha takes the lead and in a glorious way achieves victory. The PM of Pakistan gives him the title of ‘The Flying Sikh’ and Nehru declares a holiday observed in the name of Milkha.

The movie is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and produced by Rajiv Tandon, Raghav Bahl, Maitreyee Dasgupta

Madhav Roy Kapur, Rachvin Narula, Shyam P.S, Navmeet Singh 

and P. S. Bharathi. The music is composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy.
