Dilip, played by Rajpal Yadav is an autorickshaw driver in Bhopal. His rickshaw breakdown while dropping a passenger at the Union Carbide but he manages to get a job as a laborer at the pesticide plant. Since the pesticide sale drops, the officials start neglecting the safety and maintenance of the plant and a laborer dies after a drop of methyl isocyanate falls on his arm. In another incident the safety in-charge Roy, played by Joy Sengupta manages to stop a gas leak by mixing water and sabotaging the emergency siren.
Warren Anderson, played by Martin Sheen who is the CEO of Union Carbide comes to inspect the plant where he is proposed a new plan of connecting two more methyl isocyanate tanks. They ignore the signs of the deteriorated old tanks. A local reporter Motwani, played by Kal Penn tells Dilip of the dangers of the poisonous gas. He decides to quit his job after getting his sister married. Roy is concerned about the safety measures being shut down and gives his resignation.
To control loss of revenue, the officials shut most of the plants and fire the workers including Dilip. Meanwhile, Roy takes a last look at the control room when the disaster strikes. One of the faulty tanks start leaking gas. Roy alerts the workers to vacate the area. As the gas starts to spread Dilip ignore Roy’s instructions and continues with the wedding but the guests start experiencing itchy eyes and difficulty breathing. His wife dies and so do most of the other guests.
The movie is directed by Ravi Kumar and produced by Ravi Walia. The music is composed by Benjamin Wallfisch.
