Billu, played by Irrfan Khan works as a barber in the village of Budbuda. He is poor and struggles to provide for his family consisting of his wife Bindiya, played by Lara Dutta and two children. Billu starts telling his children about knowing the Bollywood actor Sahir Khan, but never gives details as to how he knows him. Thus when the actor is supposed to visit the village for a shoot, Billu’s children excitedly tell their friends about their father knowing the star. Billu’s fortune seems to have changed as people who initially used to despise and scorn him, now call him a friend. They are expecting to meet Shair Khan through Billu. A wealthy businessman also wants to meet Sahir and gives expensive gifts to Billu but he rejects all and refuses to let them meet him. This creates a doubt in everyone’s mind if Billu has been lying and his own family too is upset and questions his integrity. But Billu remains quiet throughout.
On the last day of Sahir’s shoot, he speaks at a podium to the entire village and tells them about his impoverished childhood. He was friends with another young boy named Billu, who had helped him and given him his gold earring to become a star. Billu who is listening to the talks leaves and goes home without revealing his identity to Sahir. His family comes home and apologizes to Billu. The village people now realize that Billu had been truthful all throughout. They bring Sahir to Billu’s house and the two friends unite after many years.
