Mumtaz comes to Mumbai to live with her uncle after her parents tragically pass away in the communal riots. Her uncle forces her to get a job as a bar dancer at a local bar so she can earn some money for the house. Reluctantly Mumtaz agrees but is not comfortable with the job. Mumtaz was just beginning to understand what’s happening in her life when her unruly uncle one night rapes her. She is devastated and her world falls apart. Soon Mumtaz decides to keep dancing in bars and Potya notices her. He takes a liking to her and asks her to sleep with him. Mumtaz agrees realizing there is no other direction to her life. Seeing her fragile and innocent plight, Potya proposes marriage to her and Mumtaz agrees. Soon they get married and Mumtaz has never been happier. She gives birth to a son and daughter. However her husband one day gets killed in a police encounter. She then moves away with her son Abhay. However crime doesn’t leave Mumtaz and her son, as he gets arrested and put in a juvenile cell. History seems to have repeated itself and Abhay becomes like his father, while Payal becomes like her mother.
The movie is directed by Madhur Bhandarkar and produced by Lata Mohan. The music is composed by Raju Singh.
