Sanjoy and Sunil Saikia are the two unmarried sons in the rich Saikia family, which als
o includes the father and mother. The family must put up with the elder Sanjoy's temper tantrums, drinking, and favouritism of prostitutes because he will not get married. They choose Durga as his bride because they think she can put up with Sanjoy and his flaws. Durga is from a lower caste and comes from an impoverished household. Sanjoy initially rejects Durga, but he eventually changes his mind after his mother threatens to exclude him from her will and estate. Sanjoy's decision to spend the first night with a pregnant prostitute named Chameli signals the start of Durga's nightmare with Sanjoy.
