Devdas, played by Shahrukh Khan, returns from London after 10 years of studying there. He goes straight away to meet his childhood friend and love Paro, played by Aishwarya Rai. They reminisce their childhood memories and how much they missed each other. Eventually they realize they are deeply in love with each other and can never be with anyone else. However Devdas’s parents think very lowly of Paro’s heritage, as they come from a family of dancers. His mother Kaushalya insults Paro’s mother Sumitra, who brings Paro’s proposal for marriage. Humiliated and furious Sumitra announces that she will get Paro married to a household more wealthier than Kaushalya’s and leaves.
Devdas and Paro are helpless. They wallow in their misery and are unable to fight against the insults served to their respective parents. Evetually Paro is married off to a wealthier household as promised by Sumitra. But unfortunately, the man she marries is much older to her and a widower. Devdas is heartbroken and devastated. He takes to alcoholism like a way of being alive. He goes to a brothel, where he meets a courtesan called Chandramukhi, played by Madhuri Dixit. He doesn’t care of her or the people around. He keeps drinking alcohol and thinking of Paro. Chandramukhi falls in love with him but he never reciprocates. When Paro hears of Devdas’ plight she goes to meet Chandramukhi and invites her to her house for Durga Puja.
Soon Devdas’ alcoholism goes beyond control and he dies as a result in front of Paro’s mansion. The movie is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Bharat Shah and Red Chillies Entertainment. The music is composed by Ismail Darbar and Monty Sharma.
