Dharmatma is a 1975 thriller film that is shot in the locales of Afghanistan. Produced and directed by Feroz Khan. The film is based on the story of God Father and has a star cast which includes Feroz Khan, Hema Malini, Rekha, Premnath, Imtiaz Khan, Danny Denzongpa, Farida Jalal, Helen, Madan Puri, Jeevan, Iftekar and Dara Singh. The multistar cast film took Feroz Khan’s career to a new height in the film industry.
Wealthy, powerful and a very influential Seth Dharmadas (Premnath) lives in a palatial bungalow is known for his helping poor people and assisting people who are living beyond any hope, thus he gets the name of ‘Dharmatma”. But Seth Dharamdas also has skeletons hidden in his closets and is running a parallel life of a gangter or the matka king. The only person whom he fears against him is own son Ranbir (Feroz Khan) who is not directly aware of his father’s doings.
Over a difference of opinions leading to heated argument between Dharamdas and his son Ranbir , the latter leaves his parental home. He goes to Afghanistan and one day while riding a horse chances upon meeting a nomad Jankura (Danny Denzongpa) and Reshma (Hema Malini) a Nomad girl whom he falls in love with instantly for her beauty. Ranbir proposes and a reluctant nomad father of Reshma agrees to their marriage. However, there is a fortune teller who predicts Ranbir’s death if Reshma is married to him.
The narcotics dealer proposes to their rival Dharmatma who refuses their proposal and they in turn decide to take a revenge and plan to bring grief to him by killing his only son Ranbir. They decide to plant a bomb in which Ranbir usually travels. The same day Reshma and Ranbir get married in the temple in Afghan.. Reshma enters the car first and sets to start the car engine when it explodes and she dies leaving a shattered Ranbir. The bomb meant to kill him, kills his wife Reshma instead. He also receives the news of the attacks on his father and he decides to return to India to be with his father and finds him dead. He takes a vow to find the killers, his wife and his father. He reunites with his childhood friend and sweetheart Anu(Rekha). Ranbir exposes the matka rackets across the world and hands the black money earned by his father to the police. He leaves with his new wife Anu and his mother to Afghanistan to continue his unfulfilled work
