Amar, played by Shahrukh Khan is a journalist sent to a Northern province from Delhi on an assignment. There he learns that a separatist movement is formed illegally and goes to interview the head of the group but he is hostile and don’t give a substantial answer to why they are against the government. He later meets a beautiful girl named Meghna at the station who has sad eyes. He is drawn to her but she never reciprocates his feelings. He tries to ask her the reason for her aloofness and sadness but she just claims that since she was 8 years old she has never been happy. Soon Amar is obsessed with her but she tries to avoid him. Her brother’s beat him up for following her and decides that she is not meant to be with him.

 

Amar return to Delhi and on reaching home he comes to know that his marriage is arranged to another woman. He reluctantly agrees to marry the girl named Preeti who is a modern and vivacious girl. A day before his wedding however, Meghna appears on his door step and asks for a place to stay. He later comes to know that she is there to commit an act of terrorism. The movie is directed by Mani Ratnam and produced by Shekhar Kapur and Ramgopal Verma. The music is composed by A R Rehman and the lyrics are written by Gulzar and Tejpal Kaur. The cinematography is by Santosh Sivan.
