Prem, played by Ayushmann Khurrana runs a video cassette store in Haridwar and has joined the nationalist organization. His parents get him married to Sandhya, played by Bhumi Pednekar, who is more qualified than him and is aspiring to be a school teacher. Prem doesn’t want to get married to her as she is overweight but her financial assistance makes him take the dreaded step.
Prem starts to get embarrassed by Sandhya in public and doesn’t introduce her to the vicinity people. He does not even attempt much to bond with her. Sandhya’s mother pressurizes her to have physical relations with him to consummate the marriage. At Prem’s friend’s wedding he is overwhelmed with jealousy seeing how pretty and slim his wife is. He tells everyone that sleeping with Sandhya is horrible, infuriated she slaps him and next day blames her father-in-law for their upbringing of Prem and the lack of respect for women in the family and leaves.
Prem decides to concentrate on giving his English exam and studies hard but with all the emotional pressure he is unable to write on the day of the exam and writes an emotional letter, indicating suicide to the person correcting his paper. Meanwhile Sandhya and Prem reach the court filing for divorce and the judge asks them to stay together 6 months before the final separation. A couples contest called ‘Dum Lagao’ is being held in the village and they participate, where the husband has to carry his wife across a series of obstacles. They eventually win the race and Prem and Sandhya fall in love.
