Eklavya (Amitabh Bachchan) is the Royal Guard, his family has protected this kingdom for nine generations. Prince Harshvardhan (Saif Ali Khan) is the heir but is suffocated with all the customs etc so leaves for London. His mother Rani Suhasinidevi (Sharmila Tagore) passes away so Harshvardhan is forced to return. There is a letter his mother keeps for him where she has written that Eklavya is his biological father.
Lots of unrest in the kingdom. A police officer Pannalal Chohar (Sanjay Dutt) is called to investigate. There is a plot to kill the King Rana Jaywardhan (Boman Irani). Harshvardhan is overcome with guilt , confesses to Rajji(Vidya Balan) who is his childhood love, leaves him for his actions as her father is also killed who happens to be the driver of the kingdom. Eventually she forgives him.
