Shashi, played by Sridevi is a simple homemaker who loves making ladoos and selling it at a small scale. She is happily married to Satish, played by Adil Hussain and they have two children; a daughter Sapna and son sagar. Satish’s mother also lives with them. Shashi doesn’t know to speak English very well and hence gets mocked by her husband and daughter very often. Sapna even gets embarrassed to take her to her school.
Shashi’s elder sister’s daughter is getting married and sends her family an invitation to come to the US. Since the kids have school and her sister might need extra help they decide to send Shashi alone prior to everyone else. She gets anxiety and is scared since she cant speak English well, but her family encourages her to go. In the flight she meets an elderly gentleman, played by Amitabh Bachchan sitting next to her. He makes her feel at ease and tell her what to say at the immigration.
One reaching New York she faces one humiliating incident where a café waitress insults her for not knowing to speak English and this leaves Shashi shattered and lost. She decides to learn English when she sees an ad of an English course. She enrolls there without telling her sister Manu or back home and becomes fluent in Enlgish. At her nieces wedding she gives an emotional speech that leaves everyone shocked including her husband and children.
The movie is directed by Gauri Shinde and produced by Sunil Lulla, R. Balki, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and R.K Damani. The music is composed by Amit Trivedi.
