The story of Gandhi My Father revolves around the complex and sensitive relationship between Gandhiji, played by Darshan Jariwala and his son Harilal Gandhi, played by Akshaye Khanna. The two have had different outlook towards life and very opposite aspirations. Harilal envisioned going abroad to study and become a barrister just like his father, but Gandhi didn’t support the idea, he wanted hi son to join him in the freedom struggle and causes in India. Not being able to study abroad is a huge blow to Harilal and he is disillusioned. Upset, he leaves South Africa and goes to India to join his wife Gulab, played by Bhumika Chawla.
Harilal then attempts to pave his own way and tries completing his diploma but fails miserably. To make matters worse he isnt able to make enough money to support his wife and children and end up in major financial debts. Fed up, Gulab leaves his home and goes to her own with the children, where she decides to raise them. Unfortunately, Gulab is affected by Flu and dies. A devastated Hiralal turns to alcohol and converts first to Islam and later to a different sect of Hinduism. The tragic news of Gandhiji being assassinated spreads. A distraught Harilal attends his father’s funeral unrecognized by anyone, like a stranger. He eventually dies a lonely death in poverty.
The movie is directed by Feroz Abbas Khan and produced by Anil Kapoor. The Music is composed by Piyush Kanojia.
